Software Engineer

Software Engineer | Space Sector

Location & Contract: 📍 Manchester or Stevenage | 4 days on-site 💷 £300–£400 per day (Inside IR35) � 6-Month Contract (Initial Duration)


The Role

A leading space sector organiser is seeking a Software Engineer to support the development and delivery of advanced space systems.

Working as part of a growing software team, you will play a vital role in driving software development—from requirements to delivery—ensuring products meet rigorous reliability standards in some of the world's most extreme environments.

This is a greenfield opportunity for proactive, team-focused engineers who thrive in high-intensity environments. You'll shape initial system requirements and architecture, then build product-level software from scratch for on-board and ground test systems.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop embedded software for payloads and ground test systems
  • Translate requirements into software designs, contributing to requirements, architecture, design, and test documentation
  • Document APIs and code at an appropriate technical level
  • Estimate resources and timelines for complete end-to-end software solutions (internal and external-facing)
  • Identify root-cause issues, develop test cases, and deliver robust solutions
  • Knowledge-sharing & collaboration: Proactively share insights with software teams, validation engineers, and systems groups
  • Build and maintain interface layers between high-level applications and hardware components (modems, wireless networks, sensors)

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with deep embedded C++ expertise (Linux-based systems)
  • Proven experience in a high-intensity sector (Space, Aerospace, Defence, or Automotive)
  • Hands-on familiarity with formal development methodologies and collaborative tooling:
    • Version control (Git/GitLab)
    • CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins)
    • Static/dynamic analysis (SonarQube)
    • Artifact repositories (Nexus)
    • Testing frameworks (GTest, GMock)
  • Bonus: Knowledge of industry standards (ECSS-E, MISRA CXX, or CERT C)
  • Advantageous: Experience with:
    • Computer networking or wireless telecommunications
    • DPDK, Linux kernel, or driver development
    • Python (for scripting/test automation)
  • Nice-to-have: Understanding of electronic hardware (phased array antennas, processor systems, etc.)
