Software Engineer
Location: London Pay: Up to £160,000 per annum, with very strong stock options Company: An AI startup spun out from an elite academic institution
About the Role
We’re looking to scale our growing software engineering team by midically hiring a Software Engineer to help expand and refine our systems. Combining niche domain expertise with AI, we explore research and innovation in the physical world—leading to highly complex, mission-driven work.
Key Responsibilities
- Primary focus on backend engineering, but.scale horizontal development, taking ownership from the full software stack as needed
- Build scalable, high-performance systems capable of handling real-world applications
- Design and develop end-to-end features with measurable impact on customer value
- Work with product and ML teams to translate complex ideas into viable software solutions
- Lead key architectural decisions that shape the system’s future
- Drive incremental improvements to infrastructure and efficiency
- Mentor junior engineers and help scale the engineering team
- Influence and lead the direction of the software function

About You
We’re looking for highly skilled, detail-oriented engineers with:

- Strength in building scalable, performant software systems
- A strong product mindset—diagnosing problems and delivering impactful solutions
- Expertise with statically typed languages (e.g., Rust, Go, OCaml, TypeScript)
- Experience with API design and microservices architecture
- A collaborative culture—balancing head-down engineering with mentorship and team growth
- A low ego, love for clean code, and passion for solving challenging technical problems
