Software Engineer - Private Cloud Compute, On-Device Client Frameworks
Private Cloud Compute (PCC) – Software Engineer (Swift)
About the Role
The Private Cloud Compute (PCC) team develops Apple's privacy-preserving cloud inference platform—the system enabling generative-AI features such as Apple Intelligence on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro to interact with the cloud while maintaining user privacy.
We are seeking a Software Engineer to join the team responsible for the on-device client side of this pipeline. Your work will focus on designing and shipping Swift frameworks and sandboxed services that every inference request flows through before leaving the device.
This is critical system-level work for Apple’s core platform. Your contributions will be foundational to all Apple Intelligence and Foundation Models workflows, facing rigorous requirements for correctness, performance, and privacy.
Responsibilities
You will be a key contributor to the Swift frameworks and XPC services responsible for interfacing on-device app processes to the PCC system. Below is an overview of core responsibilities:
- Design and evolve the on-device client SDKs and their underlying XPC sandboxed services, striking a balance between intuitive API ergonomics (for client apps) and strict process-isolation and attestation guarantees demanded by PCC.
- Implement scalable request pipelines with:
- High-throughput, low-latency communication paths
- Protobuf-based serialization of inference payloads
- Payload compression techniques
- Multi-turn session management with lifecycle tracking
- Retry/cancellation semantics handling
- Streaming of incremental model output to client applications
- Own concurrency and resource management for:
- Swift Concurrency, GCD, and AsyncStream
- Correct network cancellation and back-pressure application
- Lifetime management of XPC connections
- Build privacy-audited system observability:
- Telemetry to enable on-call engineers to diagnose request failures across device-cloud boundaries
- Privacy-preserving logging and signposts
- Deployment of instrumentation for reliability and diagnostics
- Foster cross-dependencies:
- Close collaboration with PCC server-side, Foundation Models, and platform frameworks teams
- Lead architecture reviews with review documents
- Mentor engineers on Apple platform fundamentals
- Profiling and optimization across all tiers:
- Use Apple’s Instruments tools to analyze real-device performance metrics
- Iterate memory-, latency-, and energy-efficient implementations
- Continuously drive down per-request costs (these frameworks are used on every involcation)

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
