Role Overview
As a Software Engineer (Monitoring Platform)—officially titled System Monitoring & Observability Engineer—you’ll lead the design, development, and maintenance of our production-grade monitoring and observability platform. This critical infrastructure:
- Is deployed across geographically distributed on-premises sites worldwide.
- Serves diverse clients with varying infrastructure and WAN constraints.
You’ll work closely with senior observability engineers to architect custom solutions, set frameworks, and influence global deployments—collaborating with internal teams to extend the platform’s reach to both engineers and external users.

Key Responsibilities
Platform Engineering & Configuration-as-Code
- Engineer framework tooling to automate deployment consistency using:
- Ansible, Jinja2, and Jsonnet for configurable pipelines.
- Docker Compose for service orchestration across the monitoring stack.
- Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins) for release cycles.
- Establish template-driven processes to reduce manual maintenance burdens.
Dashboards-as-Code & Visualisation
- Develop Grafana dashboards programmatically using:
- The Grafana SDK (Python) and JSON-based provisioning.
- Template libraries for reusable, deployment-specific visual designs.
- Partner with engineering and product teams to build insightful dashboards for:
- Internal monitoring needs.
- External end-users.
Monitoring Architecture & Design
- Architecture Prometheus-based solutions, including:
- Configuring metric collection (alerting rules, recording rules).
- Comprehensive service discovery setups.
- Develop custom metric exporters for applications and infrastructure telemetry.
- Define specifications for cross-team implementations.
Tooling & Automation
- Build and maintain Python/Bash utilities to support:
- Platform operations.
- Infrastructure bundling and deployment.
- Configuration layering (e.g., per-environment thresholds).
- Contribute to packaging and distribution pipelines.

Core Skills & Experience (Required)
- Code quality mindset: write clean, modular, and maintainable Python, Bash, YAML, or other code regardless of scale.
- Prometheus expertise: hands-on experience in PromQL, alert management, and production deployments.
- Configuration management: proficiency with tools like:
- Ansible, Jinja2, or similar (Jsonnet/CloudFormation also desirable).
- Command of Docker and container orchestration (Docker Compose).
- Deep Linux systems knowledge (infrastructure, CLIs).
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, etc.). -Architectural foresight: Building scalable, consistent, and low-maintenance solutions across diverse environments.
Preferred Bonus Experience
- Grafana-as-code: Skills with Grafana SDK, Grafonnet, or JSON-based templating.
- Thanos/long-term metric storage: familiarity with time-series solutions.
- SNMP monitoring: experience to extend telemetry coverage.
