Company Description
Team Photoelectric (28556) is a dynamic FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics team based at Boroughmuir High School in Edinburgh, Scotland. The team designs, builds, programs, and competes with advanced robots while developing skills in engineering, software development, marketing, outreach, and teamwork. Proudly representing Scotland, Team Photoelectric has qualified for the UK Championships in both the 2024–25 and 2025–26 seasons. The multidisciplinary environment emphasizes creativity, structured problem-solving, and collaboration to advance robotics capabilities. Team members engage in competition preparation, robot builds, outreach events, and STEM-focused activities that support continuous learning.
Role Description
The Software Engineer will work full time on-site in the Greater Edinburgh Area, collaborating closely with engineering, build, and outreach team members. Day-to-day responsibilities include:

- Designing and implementing robot control software

The role involves:
- Writing clean, testable code
- Debugging and optimizing robot performance
- Contributing to software architecture decisions that support competition strategies
The Software Engineer will:
- Participate in regular team meetings
- Contribute to documentation
- Mentor junior team members on programming best practices
- Support matches, testing sessions, and events as needed
Qualifications
- Strong foundation in Computer Science concepts, including algorithms, data structures, and software design principles
- Proficiency in Programming and Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), with experience in languages commonly used for robotics or FTC development (e.g., Java)
- Hands-on experience with Software Development practices such as version control, testing, debugging, and iterative improvement
- Exposure to Back-End Web Development or related systems integration is beneficial for tools, dashboards, or team infrastructure
- Ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team, communicate technical ideas clearly, and work on-site in the Greater Edinburgh Area
- Interest in robotics, STEM education, and competitive engineering environments; prior FTC or robotics experience is an advantage
- Relevant academic background (e.g., secondary-level advanced computing courses, college-level computer science modules, or equivalent practical experience)
