Software Engineer
Staff Role - Java Solutions Developer Location: Oxford Area Hours: 3 days a week in the office (non-negotiable)
We are looking for an experienced Java Developer to join our diverse technology and engineering team in Oxford. This hands-on technically focused role involves developing proprietary Java-based tools and solutions, combining desktop and web technologies within an Eclipse-based environment.
About the Role
The ideal candidate will work on plugin development for an Eclipse RCP-based proprietary tool, leveraging:
- Spring ecosystem} (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring Security, Spring Doc, Spring HATEOAS)
- UI frameworks} (SWT, JFace, Swing)
- *Data access & integration} (JPA, OData, Kafka, Eclipse ArcGIS JDK)
- Testing & CI/CD} (JUnit, Maven)
- Legacy system extensions (customised third-party integrations via Java)
You will design, code, test, document, and troubleshoot engineering systems while applying secure coding practices, Agile methodologies, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—many of which may be remote.

Key Responsibilities
- Deliver iterative products, features, and fixes using Agile Scrum in collaboration with Product Owners, Developers, QAs, and Scrum Masters.
- Provide technical advice to Product Owners while working closely with architects.
- Mentor and guide the team’s development, ensuring day-to-day support and long-term career growth.
- Actively participate in hands-on development work while maintaining an up-to-date understanding of emerging technologies (e.g., AI, cloud, microservices).
- Engage with remote teams worldwide to drive cross-functional outcomes.
Requirements & Experience
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or a related field) and 4+ years of experience developing complex Java/C++ applications.
- Proven experience with:
- Design principles, best practices, and code reviews.
- Build pipeline tools (preferably GitLab).
- Self-motivation paired with strong team collaboration skills.
- Analytical, communication, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Fast learner and willingness to adopt new technologies.
- Ability to study security issues, implement fixes, and adhere to secure coding standards.

Desirable
- Experience with:
- Eclipse RCP, SWT, or OSGi-based architectures.
- Machine learning (Python, TensorFlow).
- Geographical domains (geophysics/oil and gas).
- Certifications in Agile/Scrum or Software Engineering.
- Hands-on experience with:
- Cloud technologies and microservices.
- AI technologies/tools.
- Remote team collaboration in a dynamic setup.
