iOS Developer – Smart Security (Hybrid, Leeds)
Who You’ll Be Joining
You’ll create fully native Swift experiences for ecobee’s IoT-connected cameras and sensors, working within our Smart Security group. You’ll help customers monitor and protect their homes by developing features such as:
- Real-time video
- Security workflows
- Device control
- Subscription experiences
Our development practices are cutting-edge, and collaboration with Product Managers, Design, Quality Assurance, Backend, and Firmware engineers ensures seamless delivery of end-to-end solutions. Currently used in millions of homes across North America, ecobee is experiencing rapid growth in the Smart Security portfolio, and you’ll be part of this exciting expansion.
The UK team operates in a hybrid model, with members co-located twice a week at our waterfront office in Leeds city centre.
About The Role
The ecobee mobile app is your gateway to the ecobee Smart Home ecosystem, offering a cohesive interface for managing thermostats, cameras, sensors, and connected security systems.
Our iOS codebase is modern, built using:
- Swift exclusively (near-zero Objective-C usage)
- Programmatic UI (no legacy Storyboards)
- An internal Component Framework to streamline development
- Two-week production cycles, utilising feature flags to govern trials and experiments
By joining this multi-disciplinary team, you’ll have the opportunity to:

- Shape technical decisions while maintaining a customer-first approach
- Collaborate closely with design teams to create intuitive, world-class user experiences

How You’ll Make An Impact
- Design and engineer customer-focused features alongside engineers, product managers, designers, and domain experts
- Contribute polished code via pull requests, code reviews, and technical discussions
- Lead or support major initiatives when required
- Mentor junior developers and foster a strong, collaborative engineering culture
- Translate business requirements into scalable, high-performance backend solutions

What You’ll Bring To The Table
Technical Experience
- Swift-first experience, ideally as your primary language for iOS development
- Strong proficiency in building modern iOS UIs for both iPhone and iPad
- Experience with ** UIKit/XIBs** or SwiftUI is a plus
- Hands-on knowledge of software architecture, including:
- MVP/MVVM, Members/Delegates
- Dependency management
- Localisation
- Testing/Assertions
- Strong object-oriented programming skills in Swift
- MVVM + State Management experience is preferred
Agile & Interdisciplinary Workflow
- Agile Development experience, including daily standups, sprints, and retrospectives
- Ability to collaborate effectively across product, design, QA, and backend teams
- Comfort working in a multi-priority, dynamic environment

Bonus Skills
- Experience with video streaming SDKs or IoT protocols (MQTT, WebSockets)
- Animation and offscreen rendering (Core Animation, WebCore) knowledge is swept to CoreLocation, KeyChain, URLSession
- Familiarity with our diverse ecosystem

Our Process
Stage One: Application Review
All applications are reviewed by a Talent Acquisition representative. With high volumes for this role, turnaround times can range from a few days to a week, but every applicant will receive a note on their application status.
Stage Two: Interview Process
1. Talent Acquisition Call A 30-minute phone screening with a Talent Acquisition team member
2. Behavioral & Technology Deep Dive A 45-minute discussion with the Hiring Manager and a member of the team (e.g., designer or firmware engineer) on both behavioral and technical topics.
3. Technical Deep Dive Interview A 90-minute hands-on technical assessment with two iOS engineers from the team.
