Join Opencast: Senior Software Developer (Consultant)

Ready to work somewhere that cares more about how you build software than how fast you can ship it?

At Opencast, we don’t measure developers by the volume of tickets you complete. Instead, we prioritise engineering craft, clean design, and thoughtful problem-solving.

Opencast consultants thrive in complex environments, engaging in pair programming, embracing TDD, and championing emerging design and refactoring. We build software we’re proud of—our clients trust us not just to code but to think strategically, challenge assumptions, and guide them meaningfully.

If you value strong, robust solutions and seek a role where your judgment counts as much as your keyboard skills, this could be a great opportunity.

About the Role

Software developers at Opencast combine their technical expertise with company values to build products right, not just quickly. We emphasise:

  • A tech-agnostic approach, leveraging cutting-edge programming languages like Java, Scala, Kotlin, Ruby, or JavaScript.
  • Experience with agile methodologies and extreme programming practices.
  • Collaborative development—TDD and pair programming as core best practices.

This consultancy role is about more than coding; it includes:

  • Working with clients and stakeholders—openness, collaboration, constructive challenge, and relationship-building are essential.
  • Prioritising improved ways of working, reliable systems, and positive client experiences from discovery to deployment.
  • A dynamic environment with frequent learning opportunities and a focus on cross-stack contributions.

Responsibilities

Technical Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality, user-centred services using Java or Scala.
  • Select and apply additional languages to tailor solutions effectively.
  • Design and construct scalable, maintainable systems with robust object-oriented design.
  • Apply rigorous testing practices (unit testing, integration testing, contract tests, etc.) to ensure quality and reliability.
  • Bring recent public-sector experience, including GDS-aligned digital services.
  • Adapt quickly to new technologies while contributing to plan-for-change cultures.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
