As a Software Engineering Manager within Store Payments & Infrastructure, you’ll lead engineering teams that build and evolve business-critical store systems. This role ensures reliability in live environments across domains with complex integrations with store hardware and external systems.
You’ll focus on maximising delivery outcomes, improving platform design, testing, and operational excellence at scale—all while collaborating with teams and third-party partners.

What You’ll Do
Your role is pivotal in shaping the reliability and performance of in-store payments and technology systems. Key responsibilities include:
- Leading a team to deliver business strategies like optimising payments, enhancing customer experience, and reducing shrinkage, while maintaining hands-on operational support.
- Ensuring engineering excellence in live trading environments, covering:
- Team behaviours and operations.
- Technical direction and production solutions.
- Talent growth and professional reputation.
- Fostering accountability and self-management within the team, ensuring reliability in production-critical store systems.
- Aligning with overarching technical strategy, balancing store constraints with modernisation goals.
- Acting as an engineering platform owner, using product thinking to improve system reliability, scalability, and developer productivity.
- Managing partnerships with vendors and third-party vendors, ensuring same standards for reliability, quality, and delivery speed as core systems.
- Supporting Agile team dynamics, modelling delivery lifecycles, and reducing technical debt across legacy and modern solutions.

Specific duties:
- Lead strategic directions inPaтеля leadership and team management for Staff and Senior Engineers, focusing on recruitment and retention of high-calibre technical talent.
- Drive engineering performance outcomes related to reliability, speed, and quality in production systems.
- Define incremental modernisation pathways for software delivery lifecycles, addressing legacy limitations.
- Own third-party deliveries, ensuring vendor reliability while maintaining agility.
Who You Are
Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
- Senior software engineering experience in complex, critical production systems.
- Pragmatic use of modern platforms (web, mobile, or backend), adapatable to legacy environments.
- Leadership of engineering teams specialising in mnish and customer-affecting systems.
- Strong grasp of software architecture, cloud, and DevOps principles, balanced against legacy constraints.
- Focus on reliability engineering, security, and testing strategies for live, customer-facing environments.
- Experience with legacy modernisation and managing technical debt alongside delivery.
- Agile delivery experience in multi-functional teams, including sprint planning, retrospectives, and operational consistency.
- Ability to establish agile processes with nearshore/offshore teams, maintaining unification.
- Stakeholder management and cross-functional communication skills (technical through to commercial stakeholders).
- Tactical decision-making balancing short-term delivery with long-term modernisation.
- Exceptional people management, encouraging team ownership and cross-vendor alignment.
- Technical writing and charismatic speaking, adapting presentation styles for diverse audiences.
- Customer-obsessed mindset with problem-solving acumen and collaborative leadership.

We work with a blend of modern engineering and complex retail systems, reflecting both legacy and new technology. Key tools include:

- Vendor integrations: Store hardware such as tills, self-checkout, and connected peripherals require rigorous focus on integration testing and end-to-end solutions.
