Position Overview
Apple's Apple Services Engineering (ASE) team builds the systems and infrastructure that power critical Apple services—including iCloud, Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple Intelligence, and Maps. The Compute team within ASE is seeking an experienced Software Engineering Manager with deep expertise in Kubernetes to lead a team of Site Reliability Engineers (SREs). You’ll design, build, and operate mission-critical Kubernetes infrastructure and drive improvements to serve millions of developers globally.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Collaboration
- Lead a high-performing team of SREs specializing in Kubernetes at scale
- Collaborate with talgented engineers across Apple to deliver integrated cloud solutions
- Contribute to open-source Kubernetes communities and drive upstream contributions
- Partner with multiple feature teams to enhance and support Apple’s infrastructure
Engineering & Architecture
- Develop and optimize mission-critical Kubernetes-based systems for Apple’s unique global scale
- Author production-grade software to extend and enhance Kubernetes capabilities
- Implement systems and infrastructure that scale with performance, availability, and reliability
- Drive automation to reduce operational load through software while maintaining robustness
- Advocate and enable cloud-native technologies across internal teams
Team Growth & Culture
- Build, mentor, and grow teams while fostering a culture of transparency, ownership, and continuous improvement
- Empower engineers through mentorship, accountability, and collaboration
- Uplift team performance through clear communication and commitment to high standards
- Represent Apple in external community engagements related to Kubernetes

Minimum Qualifications
Leadership in Kubernetes & SRE
- Proven record of leading engineers who design and operate mission-critical Kubernetes environments
- In-depth working knowledge of Kubernetes internals and experience in large-scale deployments
- Expertise managing high-performing teams that design, build, and support production software
Large-Scale Infrastructure Management
- Extensive experience building, scaling, and operationalizing enterprise services in *large-scale nix environments
- Hands-on operational management of multi-tenant infrastructure (either as a public or private cloud)
- Strong grasp of cloud architectures, system design, and performance optimization
- Direct experience with producing and maintaining large-scale systems for cross-functional teams
Team Development & Operational Excellence
- Philosophical commitment to continuous improvement, operational ownership, and transparency
- Desire and aptitude to build and mentor teams, fostering a culture of accountability and learning
- Experience transitioning from individual contributor to leadership/management roles
Collaborative & Technical Proficiency
- Highly effective collaboration across engineering, product, and other cross-functional teams
- Exceptional communication skills (verbal and written) for articulating technical and strategic vision
- Technical basis from Engineering or Computer Science, with hands-on experience in designing and building software systems

Preferred Qualifications
Technical Depth
- Advanced Kubernetes internals knowledge
- Strong expertise in Golang for system writing/orchestration tasks
Automation & Operational Mindset
- Deep belief that removing manual operational tasks through automation is a core engineering responsibility
- Experience in automated infrastructure provisioning/management (including configuration/state management tools)
People & Ownership Stance
- Strong ownership mindset backed by a Highly collaborative spirit
- Self-motivated, curious, and relentlessly solution-focused with a desire to learn continuously
Technical Environments
- Experience with highly distributed Unix systems (e.g., container-native or service-oriented architectures)
