Staff Software Engineer / Software Engineering Manager

Employment: Contract

Rate: £600 - £700 Per Day Outside IR35

Working Arrangement: 3 Days Onsite Per Week - Bristol Temple Meads

Duration: 3 Months Initial + Further Extensions

Ideal Profile

  • Strong background in software engineering and architecture across both legacy and modern technology stacks.
  • Proven experience delivering discovery and modernisation initiatives.
  • Deep understanding of React, TypeScript, AWS and modern CI/CD practices.
  • Strong collaborator who can effectively bridge Product, Engineering, Architecture and Business teams.
  • Experienced technical leader with a track record of mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar within a team.
  • Able to balance strategic thinking, technical depth and pragmatic delivery.
  • Experience working in Financial Services/FinTech or a similar industry.
  • Prior experience working with pricing/fee management is advantageous but not essential.

Technical Expertise/Stack

  • Software engineering background with experience in:
    • React
    • Node.js
    • TypeScript
    • AWS
    • Microservices and event-driven architectures
    • CI/CD tooling and DevOps practices
    • Cloud-native application design
    • API integration patterns
    • Proven experience in modernising legacy applications and platforms

Role Overview

Leadership

  • Experience acting as a technical leader within an engineering team, setting technical direction and best practice.
  • Strong technical coaching and mentoring capability.
  • Ability to foster a high-performing team and a positive engineering culture through technical example and collaboration.

Product & Delivery

  • Experience partnering with Product Managers.
  • Strong backlog and roadmap input experience.
  • Ability to balance strategic objectives with delivery commitments.
  • Experience managing cross-team dependencies and delivery risks.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Comfortable engaging with senior business stakeholders and technical audiences.
  • Ability to influence decisions through evidence-based recommendations.
  • Strong facilitation and workshop leadership skills.

Hands-on element

  • Provide day-to-day technical leadership and mentoring to engineers within the squad, leading by example on code quality, architecture decisions and engineering best practice.
  • Responsible for writing high-quality code, adhering to agreed team and regulatory standards, as well as reviewing the code of peers.
  • Investigating and remediating production incidents and conducting/documenting root cause analysis.
  • Working collaboratively with the team to help deliver new features and capabilities for the business.
  • Actively participating in all team meetings and contributing to design/implementation discussions, providing healthy challenge and feedback.
  • Ensuring existing and newly developed solutions are production ready, reliable, secure, performant, observable and maintainable.
  • Where required, responsible for integrating with third-party systems in a secure and robust manner, ensuring appropriate resiliency solutions are in place.
  • Maintaining awareness of current secure coding practices and ensuring any code produced is in line with these.
  • Responsible for developing and evidencing automated tests alongside code produced.
  • Responsible for documenting and socialising all solutions produced in line with agreed team standards.
  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of a healthy backlog, including but not limited to feature tickets and any technical debt incurred.
  • Seeking approval from the appropriate Senior Engineering Manager or Principal Software Engineer before introducing new libraries and frameworks.
  • Responsible for ensuring any infrastructure produced uses IaC.
  • Responsible for following change management processes.
  • Cultivating strong working relationships both within the working squad and across HL as a whole.
