The team resides in New Bailey, Manchester, UK, with a hybrid work model of 3 days on-site, 2 days remote.
About The Role
The Software Engineering Specialist will join a Software Engineering Development team focused on designing, developing, and evolving distributed applications underpinning call services and routing across BT’s fixed voice estate.
Key Duties Include:
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable microservices-based applications using Java, Spring Boot, and containerisation tools (Kubernetes, Podman, Docker)
- Define and implement RESTful APIs compliant with OpenAPI (Swagger) standards
- Lead by example in development while conducting code reviews and mentoring team engineers to ensure high-standard delivery
- Adopt an AI-first engineering approach, leveraging AI tools and Voice AI capabilities for smarter call handling and system performance
- Collaborate cross-functionally with architects, product teams, and engineering colleagues to solve high-impact technical challenges
- Involve in system design and architecture, ensuring scalability, resilience, and real-time performance for high-throughput platforms
- Diagnose and resolve complex technical bugs, performing coding, and debugging across application stacks
- Conduct root-cause analysis to optimise performance and reduce technical debt through iterative improvements
- Contribute to technical strategic roadmaps, aligning engineering deliverables with business innovation goals
- Champion best practices, including Agile, AI-driven approaches, and cutting-edge development methodologies

- Telecom protocols such as SIP signaling, RTP media flows
- Traffic simulation via SIPP
- Troubleshooting tools like Wireshark
Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proficient in Java development with significant experience in Spring Boot
- Expertise in designing production-ready RESTful APIs following OpenAPI (Swagger) standards
- Strong knowledge of microservices architecture, distributed systems design, and scalable database models (e.g., MySQL, Timesten)
- Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes, alongside comfort in Linux environments (including basic Bash scripting)
- Familiarity with core concepts of AI development in software engineering contexts

Desirable Skills & Experience
- Expertise in Git and CI/CD pipelines
- Awareness of service discovery (Consul) and monitoring tools (Prometheus)
- Experience with Container-as-a-Service (CaaS) platforms, including cloud environments (AWS, Azure, OpenStack)
- Formal qualification and Agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum/Jira), individual accountability in cross-team design decisions
- Background in telecommunications or voice systems technology
