Software Engineer – Space, Defence & Intelligence
London, Manchester or Gloucester (Remote or Hybrid Options Available)

About the Role
At CGI, you’ll bring innovation to mission-critical projects—contributing to systems that protect nations, defend frontiers, and enable critical intelligence. You’ll be part of a high-trusted workforce, shaping secure, scalable, and reliable technology that operates at the cutting edge of national defence and global security.
We’re looking for softer excellence has advanced Engineers who are passionate about leading-edge technology, from containerisation and microservices to cloud-native architectures and big data processing. Your work will have real-world impact—helping organisations stay ahead of threats and maintain operational excellence.
Successful candidates will join us in either our Manchester or Gloucester offices (hybrid and fully remote options available).
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimise scalable, high-performance software using modern technologies such as Java, Python, Node.js, and cloud platforms.
- Drive secure, containerised microservices architectures, ensuring RESTful APIs (with Swagger/OpenAPI specs), gRPC, and high-availability systems.
- Support clients in adopting groundbreaking hybrid–cloud solutions (AWS, Azure, GCP) to modernise legacy systems and enhance mission-critical capabilities.
- Collaborate with agile teams (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) to deliver solutions under strict security constraints.
- Automate DevOps pipelines using Infrastructure as Code (IaC, e.g. Terraform, Ansible)), CI/CD tooling (GitHub Actions, Jenkins), and production monitoring.
- Maintain and update technical documentation, including Low-Level Designs (LLDs), release notes, and user guides, ensuring compliance with industry best practices.
- Advocate for security best practices across systems, iterator hardening for containers and ensuring compliance with cybersecurity policies.
- Engage in consultative client engagements, bridging the gap between technological best practices and business needs.

Required Skills & Qualifications
Candidates must demonstrate expertise in at least one of the following:
Programming & Cloud Platforms
- Java 8, Spring Framework (preferably Spring Boot)'
- Node.js, React (with Material-UI), and JavaScript
- Python (or other scripting languages)
- Cloud platforms:
- AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, EKS, VPC networking)
- Azure (including AKS, Logic Apps, firewall configurations)
- Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- Serverless architectures (e.g., Lambda, Azure Functions)
Systems & Architecture
- Containerisation & security (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, MicroK8s, etc.)
- Microservice architectures
- RESTful API design (using Swagger/OpenAPI) and gRPC
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC) like Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible (with Puppet/SaltStack experience preferred)
- Configuration management & automation
Data & Security
- Big data processing (Apache Hadoop – Cloudera distribution (CDH), Apache Spark)
- Linux environments (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian)
- Security considerations in cloud and on-prem systems
Operational & Process
- Agile methodologies (Collaboration, Sailbone, Kubernetes, etc.)
- Experience with technical documentation (e.g., Link للالتجارة, release notes, user guides)
- Shared Ownership Approach to Work
Security Clearance Requirement
NSV Security Check Required: All candidates must be prepared to undergo and secure National Security Vetting (NSV), specifically the SC (Security Check) or SD (Developed Vetting) clearance level.
