Full Stack Software Lead – National Security & Defence Systems

As a Full Stack Software Lead, you’ll design and deliver secure, scalable solutions protecting people, platforms, missions, and information against evolving threats. You’ll lead cross-functional teams, shape data-driven mission outcomes, and drive innovation at the cutting edge of technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead software delivery across back-end technologies, ensuring valuable and incremental progress
- Collaborate with engineering and customer technical leads to define and prioritise the roadmap
- Translate user needs into epics and stories, establishing effective development workflows
- Build best-in-class software, adhering to test-driven (TDD) and security-focused practices
- Select and implement appropriate patterns across established and emerging technologies
- Convert product requirements into high-quality, well-documented solutions meeting national security standards
- Develop, enhance, and maintain APIs, UI components, and data pipelines within existing infrastructure
- Act as a Scrum Master, facilitating agile ceremonies (stand-ups, refinement, planning, and demos)
- Ensure team alignment on upcoming features, dependencies, technical debt, and user needs

Essential Requirements
Technical Skills
- Back-end: Proficiency in Java (Spring Boot) and/or Go
- Front-end: Experience with React or Vue.js
- Testing: Deep knowledge of JUnit/Jest/Cypress (or equivalent)
- DevOps & Tooling:
- Version control (GitLab/Git)
- Containerisation (Docker)
- Orchestration (Kubernetes, Helm)
- CI/CD (GitLab CI/Argo CD/Jenkins)
- Project management (Jira/Confluence)
- Ability to leverage AI tools in development, including IDE assistants and agentic workflows
Leadership & Collaboration
- Demonstrated ability to lead agile teams (hands-on, coaching, and mentoring)
- Scrum Master certification is desirable
- Strong technical vision and ability to upskill teams on new technologies
- Facilitative leadership ensuring alignment between technical execution and business outcomes

Location & Security Clearance
- Primarily based in Gloucester, with deployments at high-security customer sites
- Limited hybrid options available, subject to project requirements
- Valid eDV (Enhanced Dressing vetted) clearance is mandatory for this role
