Software Technical Specialist
Location: Stevenage
This is a fantastic opportunity for a technical software professional—someone with a strong software engineering and problem-solving background—to step up in their career and join the Software Expertise Group as a Software Technical Specialist.
Salary
Circa £65,000 to £80,000, depending on experience
Working Arrangement
Dynamic (hybrid) working: Typically, 3 to 4 days per week on-site, influenced by workload classification.
Security Clearance Requirement
- Must be a British Citizen or have dual UK/British nationality.
- After offer stage, all successful candidates will undergo HMG Basic Personnel Security Standard checks (BPSS).

About the Role
As a Software Technical Specialist, you’ll work with the Software Technical Experts to provide core support across Software Engineering.
Reporting to the Head of Software Expertise UK, your role will involve:
- Delivering specialist technical advice and support implementation
- Troubleshooting and advisory services for our software products and capabilities
- Acting as a technical bridge between the Software Expertise Group, wider software teams, and functional development groups to ensure effective software solutions that align with our business needs

You’ll play a key role in:
- Identifying, documenting, and driving improvements in software capability, processes, and tools/techniques—focusing on areas such as:
- Real-time performance
- Safety and security
- User experience
- Simplicity
- Reusability
- Flexibility
- Investigating root causes of software problems and proposing effective, scalable solutions
- Collaborating closely with Software Technical Specialists, Software Technical Experts, and key engineering stakeholders to deliver strategic technical capabilities
Additionally, you’ll have a voice in shaping:
- Software Engineering Technology Strategy
- Software Product Lines and strategic prophetic technology planning
- New methods, tools, and obsolescence management
Responsibilities
Key areas of focus include:
- Complex problem-solving: Offering deep technical expertise
- Solution adoption and improvement: Implementing and refining software tools
- Technology leadership: Influencing software platform decisions through our Software Expertise group
- Stakeholder collaboration: Liaising with external teams to align technical solutions
What We’re Looking For

We seek a strong technical practitioner with the following qualifications and experiences:
Essential Requirements
- Strong programming background with experience in Ada, C, and C++ preferred
- Proficiency in Model-based software development environments and tools, including:
- SCADE
- Rhapsody
- Simulink
- Auto-code generation
- Ability to analytically synthesise technical information, assess trade-offs, and clearly present recommendations to stakeholders
- Skills in providing technical support, articulating solutions, and collaborating across teams
- Understanding of software CI/CD tools and best practices
- Knowledge of software abstraction layers and software stack frameworks
- Experience developing safety and security-related software solutions
Desirable (But Not Essential)
- Familiarity with the Data Distribution Service (DDS)
