Environmental Role – Soil Science & Agricultural Land Classification Surveyor

About the Role

This varied position combines office-based and site-based work, with field surveys, data management, and reporting in environmental disciplines. You’ll work alongside colleagues from Ground & Water, Nature Advisory, Landscape, Environmental Planning, and Sustainability teams. WSP supports flexible working arrangements, including home working and travel flexibility, with experienced mentors helping you develop your technical and professional expertise.

Responsibilities

As part of WSP’s Earth & Environment division, your responsibilities include:

  • Field surveys, site visits, and data collection
  • Supporting Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) assessments and soil resource evaluations
  • Soils-related contributions to Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and construction projects
  • Assisting in technical reporting and project deliverables
  • Liaising with clients and stakeholders under supervision

Typical Weekly Tasks

  • Plan and execute soil surveys, ALC surveys, and soil resource assessments
  • Collect and analyse fieldwork and site sampling data
  • Work with a team to develop soil science and environmental assessment expertise

Requirements & Qualifications

WSP welcomes applications if you have any or a combination of the following:

  • A degree in:
    • Soil Science
    • Environmental Science
    • Physical Geography
    • Geology or a related discipline
  • Relevant experience in soil science, environmental consultancy, or land management
  • Interest in Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), soil surveys, and management
  • Strong fieldwork skills and willingness to work outdoors in diverse conditions
  • Working knowledge of UK environmental legislation and its links to soil development projects
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to contribute in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Willingness to engage in technical development through training and mentorship
  • Basic familiarity with GIS software (a plus)
  • Interest in joining professional bodies, e.g., the British Society of Soil Science
  • Availability for site travel across remote UK locations
