Soil Scientist - Ground & Water

Senior Environmental Scientist – Ground & Water Specialism

Location: UK-wide (with site-based work) Employment Type: Full-time (hybrid/flexible working arrangement)

About the Role

You’ll thrive in a dynamic environment blending office-based and fieldwork responsibilities. Key tasks include:

  • Conducting field surveys, collecting, and managing environmental data
  • Supporting technical reports and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs)
  • Collaborating across multiple teams — Ground & Water, Nature Advisory, Landscape, Environmental Planning, and Sustainability — to broaden your expertise in diverse environmental disciplines

WSP offers flexible arrangements: home working combined with site and office travel. You’ll work alongside experienced soil scientists and environmental professionals to build your technical and professional skills.

As part of the Ground & Water team under WSP’s Earth & Environment business, you’ll contribute to high-impact projects while mentoring in a collaborative setting.


A Typical Week

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with soil surveys (including Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) and soil resource assessments) and fieldwork — sampling, data collection
  • Supporting technical reports for planning, EIA, and construction projects
  • Learning from seasoned colleagues to deepen your knowledge of soil science, agricultural land management, and environmental regulations

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake field surveys and site visits for ALC assessments, soil resource evaluations, and soil-related inputs in EIAs/construction projects
  • Contribute to data collection and interpretation, managing digital recordings ( línea con GIS advantage)
  • Liaise with clients and stakeholders under supervision
  • Draft technical reports and deliverables across environmental disciplines
  • Work under the guidance of senior professionals in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment

What We’re Looking For

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Geology, or equivalent discipline
  • Relevant experience in a related field (soil science, environmental consultancy, land management)
  • Passion for Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), soil resource surveys, and sustainable land use
  • Proven fieldwork expertise (happy to work outdoors in various conditions)
  • Strong familiarity with UK environmental legislation and soil-related development standards
  • Fluent written and verbal communication (for stakeholder engagement)
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to learning through on-the-job training and mentoring
  • Willingness to travel to remote UK project locations

Bonus Points

  • Basic proficiency in GIS software (not mandatory)
  • Interest in joining professional bodies (e.g., British Society of Soil Science)
