This mixed office-based and site-based role offers exciting opportunities to undertake field surveys, collect and analyse data, and contribute to cutting-edge technical reports. You’ll collaborate closely with teams from Ground & Water, Nature Advisory, Landscape, Environmental Planning, and Sustainability—gaining cross-disciplinary experience in environmental science.
WSP supports flexible working, blending remote work with travel to project sites and offices. Under the mentorship of experienced soil scientists and environmental professionals, you’ll develop your technical skills while making an impact.
The position is based within WSP’s Earth & Environment business, where role versatility is encouraged.
Key Responsibilities
A typical week may include:
- Assisting with soil surveys, Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) surveys, and soil resource assessments (including fieldwork, sampling, and data collection)
- Supporting the preparation of technical reports and project deliverables for planning, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), and construction projects
- Working alongside seasoned colleagues to nurture your understanding of soil science, agricultural land issues, and environmental assessment processes
Who We’re Looking For
We’d love to hear from candidates who have:
- A degree in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Geology, or a related discipline
- Relevant experience in soil science, environmental consultancy, land management, or a comparable field
- An interest in Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), soil resource surveys, and soil management
- Strong fieldwork skills, with a willingness to work outdoors in varied conditions
- An understanding of UK environmental legislation and the role of soils in development projects
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to thrive as part of a multidisciplinary team
- A commitment to lifelong learning, with openness to technical training and practical experience
- Familiarity with GIS software (advantageous but not essential)
- Interesse in joining a professional body like the British Society of Soil Science (BSSS)
