Soil Scientist - Ground & Water

Soil Science Technician – Ground & Water Team at WSP

This role combines office-based and site-based work, including field surveys, data collection, and contributing to technical reports. You’ll collaborate with teams across Ground & Water, Nature Advisory, Landscape, Environmental Planning, and Sustainability, gaining broad experience in environmental professions.

You’ll be supported by experienced professionals to develop your technical and operational expertise while contributing to projects ranging from Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) assessments to soil resource surveys and construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fieldwork & Data Collection – Assist with soil surveys, ALC assessments, and site samples, ensuring high standards of data accuracy.
  • Technical Reporting – Contribute to projects deliverables, including reports for planning, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), and construction projects.
  • Collaboration & Support – Work closely with senior colleagues to refine skills in soil science, environmental assessments, and land management.
  • Stakeholder Engagement – Under supervision, liaise with clients and team members to facilitate project success.

Person Specification

  • Qualifications: A degree in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Geology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience: Practical experience in soil science, environmental consultancy, or land management, preferably in Agricultural Land Classification, soil resource surveys, or environmental assessments.
  • Skills & Attributes:
    • Excellent fieldwork abilities and willingness to work outdoors in varied conditions.
    • Understanding of UK environmental legislation and how soil science interfaces with development.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
    • Commitment to continuous learning and skill development.
    • Basic GIS knowledge (advantageous but not required).
  • Proessional Affiliations: Interest in joining or current membership of an organisation like the British Society of Soil Science (BSSS).
  • Mobility: Ability to travel to remote UK project locations as needed.
