About the Role
This role combines office-based and site-based responsibilities, offering opportunities to:
- Undertake field surveys
- Collect, manage, and analyse data
- Contribute to technical reports and project deliverables
You’ll work closely with colleagues in Ground & Water, Nature Advisory, Landscape, Environmental Planning, and Sustainability teams, gaining exposure to a variety of environmental disciplines.
WSP offers flexible working arrangements, including home work combined with site visits and office assignments, supported by the guidance of experienced soil scientists and environmental professionals.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assisting in Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) assessments, Soil Resource Assessments, and soil-related inputs for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and construction projects
- Supporting technical reporting and stakeholder engagement under supervision
- Collaborating with GIS, data management, and environmental assessment processes
The role is based within the Ground & Water team, a part of WSP’s Earth & Environment business.
A Typical Week Would Include
- Assisting with soil and ALC surveys, including fieldwork, sampling, and data collection
- Preparing technical reports for planning, EIA, and construction projects
- Learning from experienced colleagues in soil science, agricultural land management, and environmental processes

Requirements & Preferences
We’d love to hear from you if you have:
- A degree in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Geology, or a related discipline
- Relevant experience in soil science, environmental consultancy, land management, or related fields
- An interest in Agricultural Land Classification, soil resource surveys, and soil management
- Strong fieldwork skills and a willingness to work outdoors in various conditions
- A solid understanding of UK environmental legislation and soil management in development projects
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team
- A willingness to develop through training and hands-on experience
- (Advantageous but not essential) basic GIS skills
- (Advantageous) membership or interest in a relevant professional body, such as the British Society of Soil Science (BSSS)
- The ability to travel to remote project locations across the UK
