Soil Scientist - Ground & Water

Ground & Water Graduate Soil Scientist – WSP

At WSP, we believe your career should be as unique and impactful as your potential. Join our Ground & Water team—and work on projects that shape a sustainable future while growing your skills across environmental disciplines.

About the Role

This mixed office-site-based role will provide hands-on experience in soil science, environmental consulting, and construction projects. You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including Soil Scientists, Environmental Professionals, and Sustainability Experts, and develop expertise in Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), Soil Resource Assessments, and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs).

Enjoy flexible working—combining remote and site-based options, with travel to projects and WSP offices nationwide. Our experienced mentors will support your technical growth and professional development.

A Typical Week:

  • Conduct and support soil surveys, ALC assessments, and sample collections in the field (weather-dependent!).
  • Contribute to technical reports, project deliverables, and planning submissions.
  • Work alongside senior professionals to deepen your understanding of soil management, agricultural land use, and environmental regulations.

What You’ll Need

Essential:

  • A degree in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Geology, or a related discipline.
  • A genuine interest in ALC surveys, soil resource mapping, or sustainable land management.
  • Strong fieldwork skills and resilience for outdoor work in variable conditions.
  • Basic written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills (collaborating with clients/stakeholders).
  • Team player mindset—ability to integrate with diverse professionals.
  • Willingness to travel to remote locations across the UK.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
