Manual sorting stations

Most Indian industrial laundries still sort manually at intake, using sorting bins or a sorting conveyor where staff visually inspect and route each item as it passes. Sorting speed and accuracy depend heavily on staff training and on having a clear, limited number of categories — a sort scheme with too many fine-grained categories slows throughput and increases misrouting, while too few categories loses the benefit of sorting at all.

Effective sorting schemes are usually built around the plant's actual program library rather than an abstract ideal: if the plant only runs four or five distinct wash formulas in practice, the sort categories should map directly onto those formulas rather than creating finer distinctions the wash floor can't act on.

Soil classification in healthcare and contaminated linen

Healthcare laundry adds a regulatory and safety layer to sorting: linen is typically classified at the point of use into standard soiled and infectious or heavily contaminated categories before it even reaches the plant, following sluicing and foul linen handling procedures for the contaminated category. Sorting staff handling this stream need appropriate personal protective equipment and training on universal precautions, since visual sorting of potentially contaminated linen carries genuine occupational exposure risk, and plants serving hospitals typically run this sorting function in a physically separated soiled-linen area with its own ventilation and hygiene barrier from the clean side of the plant.

Where automation has and hasn't displaced manual sorting

Automated sortation — using barcode or RFID identification tied to a specific client or garment type, feeding a routing conveyor — has made inroads mainly at the identification and routing stage for uniform and workwear programs where items are individually tagged, rather than for the initial soil and fabric-type judgment call, which still generally requires a human eye. A tagged garment can be automatically routed to the correct wash program once its identity is known, but the system still depends on accurate initial classification of untagged or mixed-source linen streams, which is where manual sorting expertise remains hardest to remove from the process.

Plants investing in sortation automation typically apply it to garment and workwear streams with stable, known composition first, while flatwork and mixed hospitality linen streams remain predominantly manually sorted.

Cost of sorting errors

A misclassified item entering the wrong wash group produces a cascade of downstream costs that are easy to underestimate:

• A coloured item in a white load risks the whole load.
• A heavily soiled item in a light-soil program comes out still visibly soiled and needs rewashing, doubling water, energy, and chemical cost for that item.
• A delicate fabric run through a heavy-mechanical-action program shortens its service life.

Because these costs surface downstream — at quality inspection, at rewash, or as a client complaint weeks later — sorting quality is one of the harder plant metrics to track directly, but spot-auditing sorted bins against the intended category on a regular basis is a low-cost way to catch drift in sorting discipline before it shows up as a bigger downstream problem.
