If you’re a defendant personal injury solicitor in Leeds or Manchester looking to step into complex, meaningful work with the backing of a global insurer-led legal business, this is an opportunity to develop your career in a supportive, forward-thinking environment.
At Markel Law, we do things differently. We combine the agility of a specialist law firm with the stability, investment, and long-term view of a Fortune 500 organisation. Our Leeds team is growing, and we’re looking for a solicitor who wants to play a key role in a well-regarded casualty practice – without the pressure-cooker culture.
The Opportunity:
You’ll join our established Casualty team in Leeds, working on a broad and challenging caseload of defendant Employers’ Liability and Public Liability claims. Supported by experienced Partners and Senior Associates, you’ll have real autonomy, high-quality work, and clear progression. This role is ideal for a solicitor with 2+ years’ PQE who enjoys technical work, values collaboration, and wants exposure to insurer-facing advisory work while continuing to strengthen their litigation expertise.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Managing your own caseload of fast, intermediate, and multi-track EL/PL defendant claims
- Advising insurers with clear, commercial and pragmatic legal advice
- Setting strategy, reserves and next steps in collaboration with senior colleagues
- Supporting the development of junior team members and paralegals
- Working closely with clients and stakeholders to deliver excellent outcomes
- Developing broader expertise across casualty-related claims and insurance-led work
- Playing an active role in the continued growth and success of the Leeds team

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
