I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Role And Responsibilities
This is an exciting opportunity for a Solicitor or Associate with 2-5 years’ post-qualification experience to join our Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence team at our Gatwick office. You’ll work on a varied caseload of personal injury and clinical negligence matters — including road traffic collisions, employer’s liability, public liability, occupiers’ liability, and cases of misdiagnosis and failure to treat — alongside experienced fee earners in a supportive and collaborative environment.
You’ll be responsible for managing your own caseload under supervision, meeting fee targets, and contributing to the wider success of the team. It’s also really important to us that you’re the kind of person who helps maintain our culture of speaking up about problems or mistakes, and working collaboratively to resolve issues rather than attributing blame.
Responsibilities

- Running your own caseload of personal injury and ultimately, clinical negligence matters under supervision
- Achieving financial targets as defined by the Group Head/Head of Department, including targets for contribution, time recording and fees
- Maintaining accurate data on Case Manager and the firm’s intranet, The Bus
- Monitoring your own performance in relation to live files, file closures, file openings, billings and time recording, and taking appropriate action to ensure targets are met
- Scoping all matters appropriately, including the use of budget templates where needed, to ensure work is delivered on time and on budget
- Delivering the highest standards of client care, ensuring that clients use DMH Stallard again and recommend the firm to others
- Assisting with and contributing to marketing and business development initiatives, such as writing for e-newsletters and attending seminars
- Attending the firm’s internal training programme and other relevant technical training to ensure skills and knowledge remain up to date
