Solicitor – Adults and/or Education

Location: Hampshire

Contract: Temporary (03/08/2026 – 03/02/2027)

Rate: £66 per hour (PAYE)

About the Role

Hampshire County Council is looking for an experienced Solicitor to join its Legal Services team on a temporary basis.

The successful candidate will provide legal advice, advocacy, and representation to the Council, its departments, committees, members, and client bodies on complex contentious and non-contentious matters.

You will manage a varied caseload of complex and higher-risk matters, providing high-quality legal advice, drafting legal documents, undertaking advocacy, and supporting clients to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice on complex and high-risk matters.
  • Manage your own caseload, including reviewing evidence, assessing risk, and advising clients on appropriate courses of action.
  • Represent the Council at court and tribunals, undertaking advocacy where required.
  • Draft legal documents including reports, agreements, court pleadings, witness statements, and consent orders.
  • Conduct negotiations and dispute resolution.
  • Liaise with clients, courts, counsel, experts, external agencies, and other legal professionals.
  • Undertake legal research and provide clear, practical advice.
  • Support and mentor junior members of the legal team where required.

Requirements

  • Qualified Solicitor or Barrister.
  • Recent experience providing legal advice on complex cases.
  • Strong drafting skills and attention to detail.
  • Good advocacy and representation skills.
  • Experience managing a caseload independently.
  • Strong communication and client care skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and make sound legal decisions.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working within a local authority legal services environment.
  • Experience dealing with complex contentious and non-contentious matters.
  • Experience advising public sector clients.
