Solution Design Engineer
Solution Designer (AI & Automation) – Freshfields
About the Role
We’re looking for a Solution Designer who is curious about what’s next in AI and how to turn that curiosity into real, practical outcomes. In this role, you’ll:
- Stay ahead of emerging AI trends and technologies, embedding them into our ecosystem.
- Quickly build expertise in our internal AI tool stack (e.g., Power Automate, UiPath) and guide teams on optimal use.
- Design fit-for-purpose solutions for process automation and intelligent workflows.
- Advise on tool selection, secure and scalable implementation, and business-aligned technology adoption.
- Act as a trusted technical advisor, bridging gaps between business needs and technical execution.
- Develop clear, well-documented designs with confidence in front of architects and stakeholders.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of innovation and practical delivery, ensuring decisions are backed by technical rigor and business value.
Key Responsibilities
Transform business requirements into actionable technical designs:
- Convert functional and non-functional requirements into detailed specifications.
- Integrate AI/automation tools (e.g., Power Automate, UiPath) into solution blueprints.
- Ensure designs meet security, scalability, performance, and compliance needs in:
- Cloud environments (primarily Azure)
- Hybrid setups
- Design modern APIs, integration patterns, and data flows in collaboration with:
- Engineering teams
- DevOps
- Service management & infrastructure specialists
- Take ownership of design authority in Agile delivery:
- Participate in sprint planning
- Provide technical guidance
- Drive continuous improvement
- Maintain architectural governance, including:
- High-quality design artefacts
- Documentation standards
- Emerging technology tracking

Your Profile
Essential Experience
- Enterprise technology design: Proven ability to architect scalable solutions for complex environments.
- AI & automation familiarity: Hands-on experience with:
- AI ecosystems (generative AI, NLP, workflow automation)
- Process automation tools (UiPath, Power Automate)
- Cloud-native design (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
- Digital workflow modernisation
- Software engineering grounding:
- Understanding of version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, and code reviews.
- Practical knowledge of C#, Python, JavaScript, or SQL.
- Integration expertise:
- APIs (REST, GraphQL), ETL/ELT workflows, and data modelling.
- Middleware (e.g., APIs Gateway) and messaging systems (Kafka, Service Bus, Azure Queue).
- Legacy system navigation: Experience ensuring new solutions seamlessly integrate with:
- Existing on-premise legacy systems
- SaaS applications
- Enterprise software stacks

Technical Strengths
- Cloud & hybrid environments: Deep knowledge of Azure Architecture (incl. AI services).
- Automation: Focus on business process integration using low-code/no-code tools.
- DevOps culture: Alignment with practices like infrastructure-as-code.
- Scalability focus: Ability to design for high availability, low latency, and cost-efficiency.
Advantageous Certifications
(Any of these—single or combined—will strengthen your application)
- Frameworks: TOGAF, ITIL, PRINCE2, Agile/Scrum Certified
- Cloud: Azure Solution Architect, Google Cloud Professional Architect
- AI: Azure AI Engineer, ML certifications
- Automation: UiPath Certified, Power Automate Master
- Security/Compliance: CISM, CISSP, ISO/27001
