The Role: Solution Development Engineer - ICA
This is a Permanent position (37 hours per week, Monday–Friday) with a Regional Office Base including hybrid working and regional travel.
About the Position
As a Solution Development Engineer - ICA, you’ll provide technical expertise within Control & Automation (C&A) to prevent, diagnose, and address system issues. You’ll lead engineering analysis and oversight to develop robust solutions, eliminate barriers to investment, and enhance asset value—ensuring compliance while improving operational efficiency.
Your Core Responsibilities
- Lead proactive engineering investigations, troubleshooting, and solution development across C&I disciplines (Control & Automation).
- Design and deliver engineering work packages—ensuring high impact and seamless handover to delivery teams.
- Provide expert governance support to ICA Principal Engineer, including:
- Engineering standards development
- WIMES enhancements
- Design guidance for capital projects
- Set and uphold technical standards in automation, instrumentation, PLCs, networks, and safety systems, including:
- Functional Safety in the Process Industry (IEC61511)
- High-integrity Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
- Subject Matter Expert participation in YW Functional Workshops to:
- Develop Engineering Specifications
- Optimise maintenance planning
- Lead Technical Governance Working Groups for Control & Automation applications, supporting capital delivery.
- Conduct subject-specific process & operational expertise audits of Control & Automation systems, instrumentation, and PLC networks.
- Coach technical mentoring and knowledge transfer, ensuring succession planning within Yorkshire Water’s ICA community.

Key Requirements
Technical Expertise
- Qualification: HNC/HND or equivalent in:
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronic Engineering
- Control & Instrumentation Engineering
- Relevant Experience:
- Developing/implementing Engineering Standards and Specifications for automation systems.
- Designing complete engineering solutions for delivery.
- Integrated PLC-system expertise, including deterministic networking and systems integration.
- Specialist Requirements:
- Strong data management and analysis capabilities.
- Proficiency in IT platforms and Microsoft Office 365 (primary: Word & Excel).
- Safety-Critical Systems & Functional Safety (IEC61511) experience (preferred).
Soft Skills
- Communicative ability: Clarifying complex technical issues for non-specialist teams and stakeholders.
- Coaching & Leadership’s: Marjority in training, development, and stakeholder buy-in.
- Negotiation & People Skills: Building strategic, long-term business relationships.
- Growth Potential Areas (valuable):
- Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering (ideal: CEng/ECert membership).
- Process industry automation experience.
- Plant optimization/reliability engineering.
- Large-scale asset management experience.
