Solution Architect (Technical Solution Engineer)
Location: Sheffield (Hybrid working) Contract Type: 12-month contract (Inside IR35) Team: Cybersecurity Sciences & Analytics (CSA), Cybersecurity
About the Role
Cybersecurity Sciences & Analytics (CSA) is a ~150-person function focused on delivering advanced cyber analytics, AI-driven insights, and scalable cybersecurity platforms across HSBC.
This hands-on Solution Architect role sits within the Strategy & Governance team and involves:
- Responsibility for end-to-end solution design
- Supporting a major data platform transformation
- Developing next-generation cybersecurity products
- Operating at the intersection of architecture, engineering, and governance
- Working closely with engineering and platform teams
Key Responsibilities
Solution Architecture & Design
- Own end-to-end solution design for cybersecurity applications (requirements → production support)
- Produce and maintain:
- High-Level Designs (HLDs)
- Low-Level Designs (LLDs)
- Reference architectures
- Architecture Decision Records (ADRs)
Data Platform Transformation
- Contribute to the design of a petabyte-scale cyber data platform
- Support replatforming from Databricks to an open-source-based architecture
- Ensure solutions are scalable, resilient, and aligned with future state architecture
Technology Evaluation & Standardisation
- Evaluate open-source technologies and vendors
- Run Proof of Concepts (PoCs) and assess trade-offs
- Drive standardisation and reusable patterns across the platform

Engineering Collaboration
- Partner with software engineering and platform teams
- Provide hands-on input (including coding where necessary)
- Support delivery of cybersecurity products built on the data platform
Governance & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with central architecture and governance teams
- Ensure compliance with bank controls, policies, and regulatory requirements
- Facilitate design forums and influence stakeholders without direct authority
Key Focus Areas
This role spans three core domains:
- Data platform replatforming (open-source big data ecosystem)
- Solution design for custom cybersecurity products
- Stakeholder engagement across architecture and governance functions
Skills & Experience Required
Core Technical Skills
- Strong experience in solution architecture & end-to-end system design
- Proven experience with big data platforms at scale
- Deep knowledge of open-source data ecosystems (e.g., Apache Spark, Trino, Airflow, Apache Superset)
Cloud & Infrastructure
- Experience across cloud and on-premise environments
- Familiarity with AWS, GCP, and/or Azure
Architecture & Delivery
- Ability to balance target architecture vs. delivery realities
- Experience delivering solutions into production
- Comfortable being both strategic and hands-on

Desirable (Not Essential)
- Cybersecurity architecture experience, including:
- Threat modelling
- Identity & Access Management (IAM)
- Encryption and key management
- Secure SDLC and vulnerability management
- Note: Strong data platform experience is prioritised over deep cyber expertise.
Personal Attributes
- Strong communicator – able to simplify complex concepts
- Collaborative, with experience working across global teams
- Proactive and self-driven (ability to operate in ambiguity)
- Comfortable facilitating design workshops and governance forums
- Able to influence without direct authority
Working Model
- Hybrid role with regular Sheffield presence
- Flexibility on office days, but focus on in-person collaboration and engagement
