Senior Non-Obstetric Sonographer

About the Role
An opportunity has arisen to join our friendly, hard working and progressive Non-Obstetric Ultrasound Team based at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.
This role includes rotation between:
- The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford (PRH)
- The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH)
- The newly created Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) in Telford
We are seeking a self-motivated, well-organised Sonographer with proven ability to work autonomously. As an experienced and competent Sonographer, you will contribute a caring and compassionate approach, coupled with meticulous attention to detail, to deliver a high-quality ultrasound service across both acute and community settings.
Essential Responsibilities
You will take professional and legal accountability for:
- Management of patients in your care
- Development and maintenance of skills to perform at an advanced level
- Conducting a varied range of unsupervised scans, ensuring a high standard of patient care
- Issuing independent ultrasound reports and initiating follow-up procedures (e.g., Abdominal X-rays, follow-up scans)

You will also:
- Suggest specialist referrals or further investigations where appropriate
- Communicate effectively with patients and carers to ensure informed understanding of procedures
- Demonstrate persuasive, motivational, and explanatory skills, including achieving informed consent
- Address communication barriers with diverse patient groups, such as:
- Infants
- Patients with learning difficulties
- Those with dementia
- Patients experiencing pain or fear

- Occasionally prepare sterile trolleys for biopsies, aspirations, and drainages, including safe disposal of used instruments (e.g., needles)
Desired Skills & Expertise
- Core experience: Gynaecological, abdominal, and small parts scanning
- Specialist interest (desirable): MSK (Musculoskeletal), neck sonography, paediatrics, or vascular scanning
Clinical development is actively encouraged, including in-house training in:
- Neo-natal head ultrasound
- Neo-natal hip ultrasound
- Soft tissue ultrasound
Additionally, the role supports the expansion of a Sonographer-led Neck Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) service and MSK injection procedures.
Requirements
To be eligible, you must:
- Hold a DMU or PgDip (CASE accredited or CASE accredited equivalent) in Medical Ultrasound
- Be HCPC registered
- Be eligible to work in the UK

We anticipate handling approximately 40,000 ultrasound patients annually, working closely with Consultant Radiologists, while also supporting Radiology Registrar and Sonographer training.
