Job Description
Location: Downham Hall, Boutique Wedding and Events Venue
The Opportunity
Are you a talented and motivated chef with a passion for culinary innovation? We are a prestigious award-winning boutique Wedding and Events venue with a thriving 2 AA Rosette restaurant, nestled in the heart of Essex’s picturesque countryside. We are searching for a dynamic, inspirational leader to join our culinary team as a Sous Chef and play a vital role in shaping our culinary offerings.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborative Menu Creation: As a key partner to our Head Chef, you will be responsible for spearheading the development of a modern, diverse menu that caters to a wide range of tastes and ages in our affluent community. Your creativity will be essential in crafting innovative dishes while maintaining a touch of classic elegance in our restaurant.
- Source Quality Ingredients: We take pride in sourcing only the finest, locally grown, and fresh ingredients. Your commitment to using top-quality produce will be central to providing an exceptional dining experience for our guests.
- Banqueting and Event Catering: In addition to our restaurant, we host weddings, events, and gatherings with up to 100 guests. Your leadership will extend to creating memorable banquet menus and ensuring exceptional food service during these occasions.
- Versatile Culinary Offerings: From breakfast to lunch, dinner, Sunday lunches, and afternoon teas, you will orchestrate a wide array of culinary options for our guests. Your adaptability and creativity in crafting diverse menus will be essential to satisfy various dining preferences.
- Team Leadership: Leading a team of chefs, you will foster a collaborative and productive work environment, ensuring that the kitchen operates seamlessly. Effective delegation and teamwork are key to your success.
- Administrative Duties: Managing food ordering, stock rotation, health and safety standards, and budgeting will be part of your daily responsibilities.
- Family Business Integration: As a cherished member of our close-knit, family-run business, you will work closely with the owners and be an integral part of our leadership team.
- Growth Opportunities: We are embarking on an exciting journey of expansion, including new event spaces. This role offers a unique opportunity to establish a stellar reputation as a culinary destination, with classic favourites harmoniously coexisting with exciting new dishes.

Qualifications And Skills
- Proven culinary expertise and experience as a chef.
- Prior experience in leading and managing a kitchen team.
- A creative culinary mindset with a penchant for innovation.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Commitment to using locally sourced, high-quality ingredients.
- Proficiency in menu development and food budgeting.
- Adept at ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Access to private transport is essential, given our countryside location.
