SOX / IT General Controls Subject Matter Expert

Location: London (Hybrid – 2 to 3 days per week in office)
Contract Length: 6 to 9 months
Start Date: Around August

Overview

We are seeking an experienced SOX / IT General Controls Subject Matter Expert to support a major second-half controls uplift programme across finance systems. This role will focus on strengthening and uplifting IT general controls within a SOX environment.

The successful consultant will work closely with external audit and advisory partners, as well as internal IT and business stakeholders, to ensure compliance across systems impacting financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the uplift of IT General Controls (ITGCs) across finance systems in scope for SOX compliance.
  • Partner with IT, finance, internal controls, and external advisors to drive remediation and compliance activity.
  • Review current control environments and identify gaps across systems relevant to financial reporting.
  • Challenge recommendations where appropriate and provide expert guidance on pragmatic, effective control design.
  • Support the implementation and enhancement of controls across an initial nine systems, with additional systems to follow.
  • Help ensure alignment between business controls and IT general controls in the broader SOX compliance programme.
  • Engage with senior stakeholders and cross-functional teams to maintain momentum and delivery against programme timelines.
  • Provide hands-on leadership to drive activity, manage dependencies, and support successful audit outcomes.

Required Experience

  • Proven experience as a SOX / ITGC SME in a complex regulatory or listed-company environment.
  • Strong knowledge of IT General Controls, including access management, change management, system operations, and related SOX requirements.
  • Experience supporting systems and controls that impact financial reporting.
  • Track record of leading or supporting controls uplift/remediation programmes across multiple systems.
  • Ability to operate credibly with senior stakeholders, external auditors, and advisory firms.
  • Strong collaboration and influencing skills, with the confidence to challenge recommendations constructively.
  • Experience working with firms such as EY, PwC, or equivalent external audit/advisory partners is highly desirable.
