Special School Nurse
Role: Special School Staff Nurse
About the Role
The ideal candidate will provide essential clinical and public health support to Special Schools between Shoreham-by-Sea and Chichester as a Special School Staff Nurse. This is a clinical role reporting to the Special School Nurses team and aims to deliver high-quality healthcare for children and young people with complex health needs and disabilities within the specified geographical area.
Staff may be required to work anywhere in West Sussex and Brighton and Hove, ensuring service delivery meetsTrust-wide needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical and public health nursing to children and young people in Special Schools, in partnership with:
- Special School Nurses
- Clinical Lead for Special School Nursing
- Community Children’s Nurses
- Community Paediatricians
- Other health professionals
- Deliver everyday healthcare needs assessment, including the development and implementation of individual care plans, health intervention programmes, and school health care plans
- Advise and support school staff on child/young person specific healthcare training, competency assessments and best nursing practice
- Facilitate safeguarding measures under ‘The Children Act’ (1989 & 2004) and ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’ (2013 & 2023), ensuring the welfare, protection, and wellbeing of vulnerable children
- Develop, implement, and review clinical protocols and standard operating procedures to promote best practice and safe care
- Coordinate responses with multiagency safeguarding teams for disabled children, young people, and young adults with complex needs
- Support and deliver health promotion activities tailored for Special Schools and Clinical Teams
- Ensure all documentation (including telephone advice, consultations, interventions) adheres to NHS information governance standards

Role Standards
- Comply with NHS professional doctrination, clinical competencies, and safeguarding policies
- Contribute to clinical and safeguarding supervision, as mandated by the Trust
- Act as a role model to colleagues and childcare staff on best nursing practice, diversity, and inclusive care
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge through attending continuing professional development (CPD) and refresher training
