Special Teaching Assistant

Special Teaching Assistant (STA) Tier 1

Address: Saint Stephen’s Close, Bury St Edmunds, IP32 7BH Salary: £25,185 - £25,989 per annum, pro rata (full-time equivalent for 32 hours/week) Hours: 32 hours per week, 39 weeks per year Contract: Permanent Reference: 5243


About the Role

Are you passionate about creating a safe, caring, and inclusive learning environment?

Join our team as a Special Teaching Assistant (STA) Tier 1 to support children and young people with moderate learning difficulties. Your role will focus on building self-respect, confidence, and independence, helping students thrive in and outside the classroom.

Key opportunities include:

  • 1:1 support roles
  • Specialist positions within our Priory – Mount Road provision
  • Flexibility to discuss aspirations at interview

Key Responsibilities

  • Lesson Support

    • Assist in preparing, planning, and delivering lessons.
    • Create tailored resources and displays to foster a positive, engaging learning environment.
  • Student Engagement

    • Work alongside teachers during lessons, offering focused support in literacy, numeracy, and specialist curriculum areas.
    • Supervise small groups or individual students as required.
  • Monitoring & Assessment

    • Maintain accurate records of student needs.
    • Support regular assessments through observation and feedback.
  • Personalised Support

    • Provide tailored assistance for individual students, including personal care tasks as necessary.
  • Social & Emotional Development

    • Build supportive relationships with students, modelling school values and promoting emotional resilience.
    • Lead or participate in lunchtime and extracurricular activities to enhance social skills.

  • Safeguarding & Supervision
    • Supervise students during breaks, transitions, and unsupervised times.
    • Adhere to safeguarding policies and assist with first aid where directed.

Requirements

Bring the following to this role:

  • Experience working with children or young people (ideally in a SEND setting).
  • Empathy, patience, and strong communication skills to build trust and effective relationships.
