We are seeking a professional, reliable, innovative, and flexible Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and hardworking team in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion sections of Blood Sciences at University Hospitals Dorset.
This exciting opportunity offers full training and future development for the successful candidate to further develop their skills and career.
About the Role
The Haematology & Blood Transfusion department is part of the Blood Sciences department at University Hospitals Dorset. The post is based at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital (within The Dorset Pathology Hub), with the successful candidate working at our laboratory in Poole Local Services Laboratory on rotation.
Key Details
- Shift system: Regular rotations through 24/7 shifts
- Location: Base at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, cross-site working at Poole on rotation
- Granted Attrition: Information about potential site relocations as part of the New Hospital Programme
- Interview date: Friday, 24th July 2026
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
- Degree: BSc in Biomedical Science (or equivalent)
- Registration: HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist (BMS)
- Specialist Portfolio: Completion of IBMS Specialist Portfolio (Haematology and Transfusion), or equivalent proven experience at Band 6 level in Haematology/Blood Transfusion
- CPD: Evidence of Continual Professional Development (CPD) to be demonstrated at interview

Desirable Experience (not essential but advantageous)
- Candidates completing their Specialist Portfolio may be considered.
- Note: Starter pay on Band 5 if portfolio not completed; promotion to Specialist BMS (Band 6) upon completion.

- Equipment: 3 Beckman Coulter DxH 900s, Starrsed RS ESR analyser, TOSOH G11 (HPLC), 2 Sta R Max coagulation analysers
- Specialisation: Internationally renowned centre of excellence for:
- Chronic blood disorders
- Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia
- Myelodysplastic syndromes
- Coagulation Service: Comprehensive haemophilia service with full range of coagulation tests
Blood Transfusion
- Modern automation: Fully automated with Bio-Rad IH500 analysers, electronic issue, and electronic dispatch systems
- NHSBT Engagement: Pilots and steering groups (latest includes Integrated Stock Management Scheme)
- Innovative Partnerships: Contribution to clinical trials and patient blood management
- Efficiency: Full Haemonetics blood tracking from vein to vein

Transformation & Relocation
- New Hospital Programme development may impact service locations (temporary or permanent)
- No reimbursement for excess mileage if relocation occurs
