Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Immunocytochemistry) – UHSx Histopathology East
About the Role
UHSx Histopathology East is seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated, and HCPC-registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join its dynamic and supportive Immunocytochemistry (ICC) team.
The Immunocytochemistry department operates across two high-throughput platforms: the Dako Omnis and the Ventana Benchmark Ultra, with an extensive antibody repertoire.
The role involves continuous loading/unloading of samples, optimising efficiency to maximise daily throughput, while maintaining a well-organised, bidirectional workflow between platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Laboratory Operations
- Sample management: Routinely handle biopsies, skim cores, and scanty material, ensuring high-quality microtomy preparation.
- Cross-platform support: Operate Dako Omnis & Ventana Benchmark Ultra systems while maintaining regular maintenance checks.
- Quality assurance:
- Actively participate in UKAS compliance and health & safety controls.
- Conduct daily quality control checks on all ICC cases, escalating issues to Senior Specialist BMS.
- Contribute to the department’s Quality Management System (QMS).
- Triage & escalation: Identify and prioritise urgent/emergency cases, troubleshoot technical faults, and liaise with the Senior Specialist BMS where required.
- Stock management: Monitor consumeable and reagent inventories, reporting shortages to senior staff.
- Supervision: Oversee laboratory assistants and delegate tasks as needed.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
