Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Microbiology) – Clinical Diagnostics
About the Role
A registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist is required to work across all sections of microbiology—parasitology, mycology, and bacteriology—scientifically analysing clinical specimens, interpreting results, and generating reports to aid clinicians in diagnosing disease and confirming the presence/absence of infection or colonisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and complex diagnostic investigations across urine, faeces, sputum, pus, blood, and other specimens/testing environmental samples (water, situational pathogen surveillance across Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, and West Kent)
- Conduct microscopy, culture, and identification techniques for bacteria, fungi, and parasites, complying with containment Level 2 (with Level 3 facilities for Hazard Group 3 agents)
- Support infection control and mandatory surveillance schemes (e.g., MRSA; healthcare-associated infections), including medico-legal specimens
- Maintain high professional standards through continuing professional development (CPD), ensuring competence and registration with the HCPC
- Contribute to training and mentoring of junior staff to improve laboratory performance

Requirements
- HCPC registration in Biomedical Science
- IBMS Specialist Portfolio completion (and eligible for Specialist Registration) or, at minimum, completion/upcoming assessment for IBMS Specialist Diploma in Microbiology (Pending candidates may proceed conditionally with a temporary AfC Band 5 salary until successful final assessment—promotion will advance to AfC Band 6)
- Extensive post-registration experience in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory must be outlined including IBMS portfolio completion date (or status if pending)

- Mandatory core hours (08:30–17:00), late shifts (11:00–19:00), and weekends, Bank Holidays, and on-call rotating shifts

Salary Structure
- Temporary (AfC Band 5) until portfolio/diploma assessment
- Permanent (AfC Band 6) upon confirmation
