Job Summary

This is a 12-month fixed-term position for the role of Specialist Doctor in the Department of Cellular Pathology. The appointed candidate will be responsible for the clinical reporting of high volume, lower complexity cases in the department across a range of general histopathology areas. The position will require you to work autonomously to a level of defined competencies, as agreed within local clinical governance frameworks and the departmental clinical lead. There is a departmental focus on turn around times and the timely reporting of cases. The candidate will work independently to deliver histopathology reporting and their competencies will cover the breadth of presentations expected in their role. The role will primarily focus on providing direct clinical care, and meeting service delivery demands. The details of the balance between clinical care and other elements of the role would be discussed during the job planning process. There is no requirement for MDT attendance.

Main Duties of the Job

The generic duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.

Clinical Duties:

  • Reporting of histopathology specimens to a high standard
  • Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)
  • Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education
  • Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

Management and Leadership Responsibilities: All staff in each Division are managerially accountable through their Lead Clinician to the Associate Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Division. Consultants are key members of the Division and are accountable and responsible for leading changes to service that will improve the patient experience.

  • To support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a member of the Division Management Team.
  • To contribute to the leadership and development of Services under the direction of the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director and in line with the Trusts business plans.
  • The post holder will ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Division including support to the Divisional Director to achieve their objectives.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues in other Divisions within the Trust.
  • Work within the Trusts framework for Clinical Governance and Risk.
  • Appointed candidates will embody the STAR values and use the principles of the NHS Constitution for England to guide decisions.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Qualifications Essential:

  • Fully registered with the GMC
  • FRCPath (UK) or equivalent

  • Clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT
  • Expertise in the full range of Cellular Pathology workload
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.

Management Administration Essential:

  • Demonstrable ability to manage priorities
  • Evidence of participation in audit and understanding basic principles of management
  • Flexible approach to work organisation
  • Evidence of management/leadership skills training
  • Intermediate to Advanced level IT skills

Teaching & Research Essential:

  • Ability to teach clinical skills to laboratory staff and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals is desirable
