Specialist HGV Driver – Leicestershire County Council

Salary: £26,832 – £28,146 per annum (based on 37 hours/week, pro-rata for part-time). (Pay Award Pending)
Working Hours: 40.5 hours per week
Contract Type: Permanent

About the Role
Leicestershire County Council’s Contract and Haulage Team is seeking a Specialist HGV Driver to deliver essential waste management services across Leicestershire.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Waste Management Supervisor, ensuring smooth operations at the Council’s facilities by:
- Driving 32-tonne Hook loaders to collect, deliver, and manoeuvre waste containers and compactors
- Maintaining effective partnerships with statutory, voluntary, private agencies, and local communities to uphold Environmental Services objectives
- Ensuring services are consistently delivered for the benefit of residents of Leicestershire
This role demands experience, reliability, and strong health & safety adherence across high-demand operational settings.
Key Responsibilities

Logistical Driving:
- Operate large articulated lorries and specialised compactor vehicles
- Perform on-site maintenance checks and secure load compliance
- Comply with HGV charge scheme, DVSA regulations, and Council logistics guidelines

Service Delivery:
- Partner with teams to optimise waste collection, distribution, and material handling
- Solve operational challenges relating to waste resourcing and local site demands

Team & Stakeholder Relations:
- Work cooperatively with council staff, contractors, and partners to maintain service promises
- Represent the team in internal reviews and community relations
- Upskill team members (where applicable) towards Train-the-Trainer goals

- Health & Safety:
- Adhere to CPC requirements, risk assessments, and accident prevention protocols
- Ensure compliance with plant operations (e.g., loading shovel training)
Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate:
- A full (provisional or full) driving licence (with valid business use insurance)
- HGV Category C licence (essential requirement) with an active Driver CPC.
- Minimum 3+ years driving HGV vehicles in high-volume scenarios.
- .channel plate operator or equivalent (or ability to complete relevant training quickly)
- Hidden or basic operator qualifications (or willingness to work towards train-the-trainer role).
Desirable Experience:
- ForePerson or loading machine tickets for waste operations
- Experience using specialised waste systems (e.g., toggle hooks, sheets)
- Premium knowledge of HGVs, tom-toms, or trailer tippers
Attitudinal Skills:
- Attention to physical demands (lifting >20kg loads/daily, often in confined spaces).
- A can-do approach in managing unpredictable gate-onsituations.
- Ability to drive in public, sensitive communities with professional courtesy.
