Job Description

Specialist Nurse – Cancer Care
Competitive salary | Full time – 37.5 hours | Flexible working to cover the needs of the service and participation in scheduled on-call service | Dunedin | Access further education-after qualifying period

Here at Spire Dunedin, we pride ourselves on the highest standards of care for our patients and the ability to dedicate time to ensuring our small-dedicated team supports all aspects of care. We work closely and flexibly with dynamic oncologists and haematologists in delivering a range of treatments to patients with breast, colorectal, prostate, and haematological cancers. We also work closely with external organisations such as the Acute Trusts, Hospices, and charities, as well as internally with our other colleagues in pharmacy, radiology, outpatients, theatre, and the ward.

Spire Dunedin Hospital has been serving the Reading community for over 100 years, as a first-class medical facility. Based in the heart of Reading, the hospital has two theatres, 16 inpatient beds, three recovery bays, Oncology services, and an Endoscopy Suite.

Duties And Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse Specialist will act as the clinical expert and professional resource to the multi-professional team, patients, and carers.

  • Management of direct patient care and to be responsible for a clinical caseload and safely administer SACT.
  • To work closely with other site-specific Consultants, CNS’ and work as a team.
  • Maintain accurate and concise documentation in relation to clinical activities.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies both within and out of the hospital setting to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements.
  • Provide professional support to colleagues working within the cancer unit setting.
  • To offer patients a Holistic Needs Assessment at relevant points in their pathway. To provide a care plan and if identified, referral to Level 3 or Level 4 psychological care providers.
  • Provide specialist advice which is evidence-based to deliver clinically effective care to cancer patients and their families in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Promote a culture of respectful relationships through professional role modelling conveying the principles required for nurses to improve the patients experience e.g. Pre-SACT consultation, understanding and involving patients in their care.

Who We're Looking For

  • Registered General Nurse with valid NMC registration
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience of working at a senior level within cancer services and the administration of SACT.
  • Hold an accredited SACT administration course UKONS accredited.
  • Demonstrate considerable post-registration competency in the UKONS 24-Hour triage tool.
  • Post-registration course within cancer care desirable.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to organize work around competing demands on time.
  • Demonstrate that can work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate computer literacy skills including use of Microsoft Office software packages, internet & email.
