Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and committed professional to join the Harrow and Hillingdon Children Looked After Team as a Specialist Nurse for Children Looked After.
We are seeking a nurse with experience of working with children, young people and families within the community, and a sound knowledge of the needs of children looked after. The successful candidate will support the Named Nurse for Children Looked After, work autonomously, and undertake high-quality statutory health assessments and health promotion activities in line with the guidance document “Promoting the Health and Wellbeing of Looked After Children” (DH & DoE 2015 / 2022).
- Post: Band 7 (37.5 hours per week), based at Westmead Clinic
- Eligibility: Ideal for highly motivated individuals passionate about improving health outcomes for children who are looked after.
About the Role
The Specialist Nurse for Children Looked After will work as part of the Harrow and Hillingdon Looked After Children’s multi-agency service, providing seamless, holistic care pathways.
Core Responsibilities
- Improve the health and well-being outcomes for children looked after in Harrow, Hillingdon, and children placed in these boroughs.
- Provide clinical care to children looked after, including assessing health needs and tracking progress.
- Offer expert advice to carers and healthcare professionals in social services and other agencies.
- Support the Named Nurse to ensure the team fulfils its responsibilities towards children looked after.
Working for the Organisation
You will join a supportive team of nurses, medical staff, and administrative personnel, all dedicated to improving services for children looked after.

Detailed Job Description & Main Responsibilities
Qualifications
Essential Criteria
- NMC-registered nurse with significant post-qualification experience in paediatrics, community nursing, mental health nursing, or practice nursing.
- Diploma/degree or equivalent experience relevant to clinical practice.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPFD), capable of operating at postgraduate level.
- Level 3 Safeguarding Training.
Desirable Criteria
- Registered Health Visitor/School Nurse/Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.
- Nurse Prescribing qualification.
- Mentorship Module or ENB 998.

Experience

- Experience delivering universal and targeted health services to children aged 0–19, including vulnerable groups.
- Direct work experience with looked-after children and care leavers.
- Training and health promotion planning/delivery expertise.
- Ability to function independently while collaborating within a team.
- Experience of integrated/joint working to provide high-quality care and achieve health outcomes.
Desirable Criteria
- Contribution to strategic service planning.
- Advanced project or team management experience.
Knowledge Expected
Essential Criteria
- Familiarity with the UK childhood vaccination programme.
- Understanding of risk management and infection control.
- Awareness of policy guidance and integrated service development for children and families.
- Knowledge of child protection procedures.
Desirable Criteria
- Skills in data collection and analysis.
- Experience with resource management and allocation.
