B6 Occupational Therapist (12-month Fixed-Term) – Neurosurgery & Neurology / Hyper Acute Rehab
Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites applicants to join a dynamic 12-month fixed-term opportunity as an experienced Occupational Therapist (B6). This role combines work across neurosurgery, neurology, and the Hyper Acute Rehab project, operating within a 7-day service model, including weekends and bank holidays, under roster-based rotas.
You will provide senior clinical and operational leadership while supporting the strategic development of therapy services in neurosciences. This post is a full-time (1 whole-time equivalent) role, distributed as:
- 0.6 wte in neurosurgery & neurology,
- 0.4 wte in the new Hyper Acute Rehab team.
The role fosters collaboration with neurology, neurosurgery, and therapy teams, requiring flexibility in hours and strong multidisciplinary working (MDT).
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a senior clinician and operational leader within the neurosciences therapy service, working alongside senior therapists to develop and refine service offerings.
- Provide neuro-specific assessments, goal-directed rehabilitation, and multi-therapy discharge planning for high-dependency neurological patients.
- Collaborate with local community services, regional specialist units, and local DistrictGeneral Hospitals (DGHs) for seamless patient handover.
- Participate in a 7-day service, including weekends, ensuring seamless continuity of care.
- Represent Occupational Therapy in audit, research, and service development initiatives.
- Act as a clinical educator, supporting staff and peers in improving best practices and events-based outcomes.
- Engage with clinical supervision and peer mentorship frameworks.
- Work within the broader Therapy Services department (100+ staff), fostering knowledge-sharing across disciplines.
About the Role
This fixed-term secondment is designed to experience and influence the evolving Hyper Acute Rehab service. You will:
- Shape a 21st-century acute neuro-rehab pathway, from rehabilitation bed activation to patient complex discharge.
- Work in a diverse Allied Health Professional (AHP) setting, promoting inter-agency cohesion.
- Join a trusted multi-disciplinary team, reflecting UHS’s core values: Patients First, Always Improving, Working Together.

Essential Professional Standards
- Qualification: Degree in Occupational Therapy or equivalent qualification; or if developing enhanced skills in a wider clinical career.
- Registration: Current HCPC registration.
- Auditand Peer-Review Experience: Demonstrated ability to arrange evidence-based clinical probes.
- Team Integration: Evidence of proactively interacting multidisciplinary experiences, showcasing versatility in risk.
- Privacy & Confidentiality: Understanding of Data Protection laws and maintaining patients’ identities in digital platforms.
