Specialist Optometrist

Senior Specialist Optometrist – Manchester Royal Eye Hospital

About the Role An enthusiastic specialist optometrist is invited to join our large, friendly, and supportive team at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. As a leading teaching hospital and centre of excellence for ophthalmic care, we offer a dynamic and fulfilling opportunity to work alongside expert consultant ophthalmologists and a dedicated team of over 40 optometrists.

Core activities include:

  • Delivering outpatient care within the multi-disciplinary team
  • Performing refraction, complex medical contact lens management, and low vision rehabilitation
  • Supporting extended roles in cataract, glaucoma, macular treatment, diabetes, corneal, paediatric, and acute services

Additionally, you’ll contribute to:

  • Clinical research, audits, and teaching in collaboration with the University of Manchester
  • Professional development training for colleagues and visiting optometrists, alongside medical undergraduates

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and participate in highly specialist clinical activities, requiring extensive expertise
  • Analyse and ensure the quality of care within Optometry Services
  • Support the Principal and Lead Optometrists in maintaining professional standards
  • Contribute to the training of pre-registration optometrists, visiting optometrists, and medical students
  • Collaborate on clinical research with the Department of Ophthalmology and Department of Optometry

Requirements

  • Registered with the General Optical Council (GOC)
  • Degree in Optometry or Ophthalmic Optics (BSc or equivalent)
  • Extensive clinical experience essential
  • Previous hospital optometry experience desirable
  • Advanced knowledge of ocular pathology and experience across ophthalmic subspecialties

Note: Part-time applications will be considered. Saturday working required.
