Specialist Optometrist – Permanent Part-Time Role

The Role

An exciting permanent part-time opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Optometrist to join the Optometry and Ophthalmology Medical Retina and Corneal Teams within NHSGGC.

  • Work within an established team of ~40 Optometrists across eight Ophthalmology departments
  • Manage caseloads in Medical Retina and Corneal services, including macula, diabetic and corneal patients
  • Lead a contact lens service and deliver an optometry-led capsulotomy clinic
  • Support core optometry clinics and colleagues with caseloads
  • Contribute to service development and clinic rotations

This is a varied and specialist role, offering clinical expertise growth in Ophthalmology.

All roles must meet certificate of sponsorship (CoS) eligibility per current Home Office requirements.


Key Details

  • Location: Gartnavel General Hospital (G12 OYN), with clinics delivered across multiple NHSGGC sites
  • Hours: Permanent part-time, 26.1 hours/week, 09:00–17:00
  • Flexibility: Must travel between sites (essential)
  • Salary: Pro rata for part-time hours

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a clinical caseload across Medical Retina and Corneal services (incl. macula, diabetic and corneal patients)
  • Lead a contact lens service and run an optometry-led capsulotomy clinic
  • Support core optometry clinics and contribute to service development
  • Supervise and mentor Optometrists, Pre-Registration Optometrists, and Healthcare Support Workers
  • Conduct Turas appraisals and perform vetting duties
  • Demonstrate clinical autonomy, advanced decision-making, and the ability to work independently or collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team

Requirements

  • Essential:

    • Degree in Optometry
    • Current GOC registration
    • Independent Prescriber qualification
    • Significant hospital contact lens experience
    • Experience in Medical Retina, Corneal, or extended Ophthalmology services
  • Desirable:

    • Experience in supervision support of junior staff
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Exceptional organisation and time management
