The Role

An exciting permanent, part-time opportunity has opened for a Specialist Optometrist to join the Ophthalmology Medical Retina Team within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Role Overview

  • Permanent post, part-time (3.75 hours)
  • Based at Gartnavel General Hospital (with Thursdays at New Victoria Hospital)
  • Join a four-strong team of Optometrists supporting eight Ophthalmology departments across Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
  • Focus on specialist assessment and management of patients with diabetes, including clinical supervision and training of junior colleagues.
  • Ideal for an experienced Optometrist seeking further development in the Hospital Eye Service.

Note: All roles undergo Home Office sponsorship eligibility checks as required.


Duration, Location & Working Pattern

  • Permanent, part-time: 3.75 hours per week
  • Hours: 09:00 AM – 12:45 PM
  • Primary base: Gartnavel General Hospital (clinic rotates to New Victoria Hospital on Thursdays)
  • Flexibility: You may work at other NHS GGC sites as the role develops.
  • Resource note: Salary corresponds to part-time hours only (pro-rata calculation).

Key Responsibilities

Your role will include the following core duties:

Clinical Care & Patient Management

  • Provide specialist assessment and management of diabetic patients within Ophthalmology.
  • Deliver high-quality clinical care within the Hospital Eye Service.

Team Supervision & Development

  • Conduct Turas appraisals for junior staff.
  • Offer clinical supervision to Pre-Registration Optometrists and Healthcare Support Workers.

Service Development

  • Support ongoing service improvements.
  • Potential to rotate into core and extended Ophthalmology roles following comprehensive training.

Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Holding a degree in Optometry
  • Full registration with the General Optical Council (GOC)
  • Proven experience in managing diabetic retinopathy patients in a healthcare setting

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate qualification in diabetes or equivalent practical experience
  • Prior experience in an NHS Hospital Eye Service
  • Experience of supervising or mentoring junior staff

  • Ability to prioritise workload effectively
  • Willingness to travel across multiple NHS GGC sites as required
