Working Full time: 37.5 hours per week
About the Role
A band 6 hospital-based orthoptist is required to join the Countess of Chester hospital Westminster Eye Clinic comprised of a large team of 9 ophthalmologists, 6 orthoptists, 6 optometrists, specialist nurses, nurse assistants, ECLO's and ophthalmic medical photographers.
Responsibilities
- Provide a varied orthoptic caseload supporting the paediatric and general ophthalmology sub-speciality services including core orthoptic clinics, pre- and post-operative squint surgery assessment, thyroid eye disease clinics and acute stroke vision assessment.
- Be involved in extended roles within oculoplastic clinics, medical retina and glaucoma.
- Provide specialist orthoptic services as an autonomous practitioner within the hospital and community settings.
- Provide additional specialist services within the orthoptic department and the broader ophthalmic services.
- Provide clinical teaching to undergraduate orthoptic students, pre-registration opticians, doctors, nurses, and other allied health professional.

About the Organisation
The orthoptic department is a validated teaching centre for orthoptic undergraduates, as well as providing teaching to many other health care professionals.
The Trust’s services are provided from three locations:
- The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 473 general and acute beds.
- Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 60 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
- Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.
The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust employs 5,964 staff (headcount) to provide care and treatment to a population of over 400,000 people living in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire.
The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care System. Due to its location on the border with North Wales, the Trust also works closely with the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

The Trust treats patients from England and some parts of Wales. During 2024/2025, there were approximately 643,000 patient attendances (inpatient, A&E, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery.
Requirements
An enthusiastic and motivated orthoptist with a degree or diploma in orthoptics and registered with the HCPC is required from July 2026. Proactive continued professional development is expected, learning is encouraged, and there is potential for future development in advanced or enhanced duties.
