Specialist Paediatric Occupational Therapist

Job Description: Paediatric Occupational Therapist (Rotational Scheme) – Harrow

Overview

The Harrow Paediatric Occupational Therapy team is seeking a motivated, flexible, and innovative occupational therapist to join their rotational scheme, working with children and young people across Harrow’s community paediatric services. This role rotates through pre-school, mainstream schools, and special schools, offering diverse clinical exposure while supporting Holt’s commitment to family-centred, evidence-based care.

Based at Alexandra Avenue, the team fosters collaboration with health, education, and social care partners in a dynamic setting.


About the Role

This is a rotational scheme, allowing the post-holder to gain broad experience in paediatric OT across:

  • Pre-school settings
  • Mainstream schools
  • Secondary/special schools

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering evidence-based interventions to enhance occupational participation.
  • Contributing to clinical audits, research, and departmental development.
  • Providing training to colleagues, parents, and OT/physio students.
  • Supervising PTA and LSA staff.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice & Care

  • Design and deliver individualised OT programmes for CYP, considering family needs and sustainability.
  • Facilitate IEP, health planning, and care coordination across services.
  • Share information while adhering to data protection and confidentiality policies.
  • Adapt communication to cater for diverse needs, including EAL, cultural barriers, and sensory/learning difficulties.
  • Involve parents/carers in decision-making and treatment goals.

Collaboration & Education

  • Train parents, teachers, and professionals on paediatric disabilities (sensory, motor, functional) and OT interventions.
  • Supervise OT students and support PTA/LA staff on tasks.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary meetings, audits, and service development.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Produce specialist clinical reports for child-specific evaluations.
  • Advise on education/healthcare plans, outlining functional impact in learning environments.

Person Specifications

Essential Criteria

Attitudes & Aptitudes

  • Outstanding organisation, empathy, and analytical skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, negotiation, and conflict management.
  • Adaptability to unpredictable demands and prioritisation.

Communication

  • Excellent verbal/written English for reports, training, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with CYP of all ages and abilities.

Experience

  • Graduate OT qualification (UK-registered license to practice).
  • Digitally literate (clinical IT systems).
  • Experience in:
    • Postgraduate clinical areas (Paediatrics/Neurology preferred).
    • Writing clinical notes/reports.
    • Managing a caseload.
    • Teaching professionals/parents.

Knowledge

  • Occupation-based OT principles (inclusive of neurology, seating, sensory techniques).
  • Role-play of health/education/social care professionals.
  • Awareness of clinical governance and safeguarding.

Desirable

  • Membership of RCOT’s Children, Young People & Families (CYPF) Section.
  • Paediatric wheelbase time in a community role.
  • Exposed to NICSSEN policies and special educational needs reforms.

Skills & Ethics

  • Application of RCOT values: compassion, respect, empowerment, partnership.
  • Familiarity with SEND, accessibility legislation, and safeguarding standards.
