Specialist Surgical Pharmacists

Specialist Surgical Pharmacists provide therapeutic expertise in a variety of surgical specialties. We are a tertiary centre for thoracic and hepatobiliary surgery, ophthalmology and provide general surgical care in areas such as colorectal and trauma and orthopaedic surgeries. This role will be upskilled to provide clinical expertise to each surgical area, critical care step-downs and pick up more complex project work in areas such as ophthalmology and trauma.

Education Commitment

The education commitment will work with our Lead Education and Training pharmacists on the delivery of undergraduate, foundation pharmacist and medicines optimisation technician training. This is an exciting time to be in an educational capacity following the new GPhC standards with the first cohort of post-registration pharmacists joining with a prescribing qualification and the challenges and opportunities that will bring for acute care.

About the Role

We are looking for motivated new team members to join our Bristol Royal Infirmary pharmacy team. Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate post-registration experience in clinical practice with development against the RPS Foundation Pharmacy Framework, will be GPhC registered and be able to demonstrate their experience in clinical practice through application and interview showcasing their readiness to move into a more specialist role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide a patient-centred clinical pharmacy service to adult surgical patients, ensuring safe, effective and evidence-based medicines use in line with Trust and national guidance.
  • Optimise complex therapies, support medicines reconciliation, and prescribe independently within competency.
  • Active participation in daily multidisciplinary ward rounds, providing expert medicines advice, and supporting safe prescribing.
  • Contribute to guideline development, governance, audit, quality improvement and optimisation of practice.
  • Support education and training of pharmacists and MDT staff, undergraduates and including mentoring those undertaking postgraduate development.
  • Involvement in service development, research and quality improvement is expected, including medication incident review, KPI development and audit activity, with opportunities to present and publish work.
  • Leadership responsibilities include supporting or line managing staff, prioritising workload, and deputising for senior pharmacy leadership as required.

Working Conditions

  • Participate in weekend, bank holiday and late-working rotas.
  • Maintain GPhC revalidation.
  • Support dispensary and stock processes in line with Trust policies and procedures.
