University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team in their paediatric neurobehavioral sleep clinic as a Sleep Practitioner. About the Role
A specialist paediatric sleep medicine position is available, supporting children (ages 1–18) with chronic sleep disorders. This role requires paediatric sleep practitioner expertise, particularly for children with learning difficulties, autism, or sensory integration challenges.
The Sleep Practitioner will participate in managing sleep disorders through assessment clinics via video consultation or face-to-face appointments. Key conditions include:
- Chronic childhood insomnia
- Parasomnias (sleep walking, night terrors)
- Movement disorders during sleep
- The team requires experience with specialised neurobehabilitation evidence. Individualised sleep intervention programmes will be developed and delivered, with follow-up consultations for families.
With training provided on-topic basics, this team includes: ✔ Consultants (respiratory, neurology, sleep medicine) ✔ Sleep Fellow (Band 7 or above) ✔ Clinical Nurse Specialists (2) ✔ Clinical Psychologists (2) ✔ Existing Sleep Practitioners (3) Japanese Bed Warmth Sysytem for 2 is being utilized in clinic work where relevant.

About the Team
The Children’s Sleep Disorder Service is one of only a few UK-based specialist paediatric sleep teams, employing a secure online consultation platform (video-based clinics). Patients engage from across the nation. Clinical outreach also encompasses research publications, national/international conference presentations, and conjugated training opportunities nationwide.
Key Team Efforts
- Operating via video teleconsultations since pre-coronavirus, ensuring accessibility.
- Offering leadership in sleep medicine research via Dr Vanessa Hewertson (Service Lead).
- Inclusive collaboration in presenting research posters at conferences.
- Involvement in professional training for child sleep practitioners both regionally and internationally.
Responsibilities
As Sleep Practitioner, you will:
- Assist lead clinicians in sleep assessment clinics (remote or face-to-face per availability).
- Managed a caseload of 30 patients with chronic childhood insomnia, focusing on impacts to daily function.
- Develop individualised sleep intervention plans, coordinating wraparound support with families.
- Provide direct/work via telephone/teleconsultation follow-ups.
- Attend monthly caseload supervision (with senior Band 5 sleep practitioner).
- Participate in weekly MDT team clinics to discuss and kickstart adaptations for complex families.
- Engage in monthly service development, learning sessions, and journal clubs for evidenced practice.

Required Qualifications & Experience
- NNEB (or equivalent paediatric care qualification)
- Two years minimum working with children with additional/complex needs in community or health settings.
- Demonstrated ability to assess a child’s developmental age.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for supporting and engaging families.
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and anti-discrimination in healthcare.
Advisory Criteria (Desirable)
- Prior experience with:
- Sleep difficulties, autism, sensory integration challenges
- Parent/behaviour programme involvement for sleep solutions.
- Familiarity with special needs support structures.
