Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

About You

  • Registered with the HCPC and RCSLT.
  • Experienced in managing dysphagia and communication needs within Head and Neck/Oncology or acute settings.
  • Driven by clinical excellence, innovation, and a passion for collaborative, patient-centred care.
  • Speaking Welsh is desirable but not mandatory.

Main Duties

As a Band 6 practitioner, you will:

  • Use clinical skills to manage complex communication and dysphagia issues in Head and Neck Cancer.
  • Develop clinical expertise in this caseload.
  • Provide seamless support for patients across multiple environments:

  • Radiotherapy Clinics – Proactive support during acute cancer treatments.
  • Outpatient Appointments – Ongoing rehabilitation and evidence-based interventions.
  • Surgical and Oncology Inpatients – Assessment of swallowing; communication support post-surgery and for hospitalised oncology patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Excellence – Assess, diagnose, and treat complex conditions with advanced clinical reasoning.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential Criteria:

  • Recognised degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • HCPC registered.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (e.g., updated CPD portfolio).

Desirable Criteria:

  • Membership of an appropriate clinical network group.
  • Additional professional or academic qualifications relevant to clinical practice.
  • Accredited Practice Placement Educator Certificate.

Experience

Essential Criteria:

  • Clinical experience across Adult SLT services.
  • Delegation to non-registered staff.
  • Involvement in service development/improvement.
  • Experience contributing to student training.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Delegation to registered staff.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary/multiprofessional teams.
  • Experience in practice supervision.
  • Experience providing Welsh/English therapy.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential Criteria:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Problem-solving ability.
  • Negotiation skills.
  • Knowledge of assessment tools.
  • Reflection and analytical skills.
  • Diverse clinical experience.
  • Awareness of other professionals’ roles in patient care.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Advanced clinical reasoning skills.
  • Demonstrable understanding of clinical governance and risk assessment.
  • Knowledge of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC).
  • Welsh-speaking proficiency desirable.
