Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated therapeutic radiographer to join our friendly team as a Specialist Urology Therapeutic Radiographer specialising in prostate radiotherapy.

This is a brand-new role for the department. The post holder will work closely with the urology clinical oncologists and other members of the MDT.

It is envisaged that the role will include supporting non-medical outlining of planning volumes, setting up and running pre-hab clinics for prostate patients, supporting prostate SABR role out on the treatment units and may also include supporting the review service with post treatment patient reviews.

As part of this role, you will be required to undertake post graduate study including non-medical prescribing.

The post holder will be required to work clinically one day a week to maintain clinical skills to support the on-call roster and wider radiotherapy service.

Radiotherapy at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is based in a new bespoke purpose built building that opened in 2015 on the Worcestershire Royal Hospital site and currently consists of a small friendly team of just over 70 staff within radiotherapy and radiotherapy physics.

We are currently undergoing a linac and CT replacement program to include SGRT installation to replace our 3 matched Elekta linacs and Toshiba Wide Bore CT Scanner. Raystation is used for all treatment planning, including Vsim. We also have a Gulmay superficial/orthovoltage unit.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a widely skilled and experienced practitioner with an expert knowledge in Urological (prostate) cancer radiotherapy treatment.

The post holder will work closely with the urology clinical oncologists as well as other members of the MDT. They will be responsible managing the pre-treatment and brachytherapy pathway patients and their carers.

This role will be a split role to include setting up and running of pre-hab clinics, prostate outlining for planning, post treatment reviews as well as maintaining clinical duties in order to maintain competencies for on call duties as well as expert advice on prostate SABR imaging (expect 2 days prehab/review/2 days outlining/1 day clinical).

The post holder will be expected to undertake non-medical independent prescribing.

Job Description

Job responsibilities

Key Duties To Include:

  • Operate radiotherapy equipment safely and accurately interpreting and applying radiation prescription plans, using clinical judgement to justify deviation from protocol.
  • Be clinically competent to safely and efficiently manipulate all complex and specialised equipment associated with the planning and treatment of patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment with ionising radiation.
  • Run radiotherapy pre-hab clinics for patients referred for prostate radiotherapy, delivering a multi-disciplinary approach to patient-centred care by appropriate sign-posting to relevant staff, services or agencies where required.
  • Assist the clinical oncologists by undertaking contouring of planning images during the planning process.
  • Be a key member of the urology team acting as a resource within the trust to support the MDT regarding patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment as well as post treatment support.

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive post qualification experience with some experience in a senior capacity using a wide range of techniques and equipment including prostate SABR experience
  • Experience of developing and implementing new techniques / protocols

Desirable

  • Elekta or Mosaiq experience
  • Participation in project groups or working parties
  • Experience of research and audit
  • Experience of non medical outlining of the prostate for radiotherapy planning purposes

Qualifications

  • BSc Radiotherapy or equivalent.
  • HCPC Registration
  • Demonstrable CPD and evidence of using learning to improve practice

Desirable

  • Post graduate education / qualification in specialist area
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification
  • Leadership or management qualification

  • Masters equivalent knowledge of routine and highly specialist Radiotherapy techniques and associated requirements for patient care
